  3. Pull vacuum on the purge valve with it commanded closed and confirm it does not pass vacuum. A valve that bleeds down quickly is leaking past its seat and is the most common P0496 cause
  4. Inspect and bench-test the vent valve in the same way. The vent valve must seal completely during the EVAP self-test, otherwise the system can draw vapour through and mimic high purge flow
  5. Inspect the charcoal canister for saturation. A canister overfilled with liquid fuel (often from chronic overfilling at the pump) will push vapour into the purge line and should be replaced if heavy or fuel-logged
  6. Check the purge solenoid wiring, connector, and ground for corrosion or chafing. A backfed or shorted circuit can hold the valve open even when the ECU commands it closed. Clear the code and complete several drive cycles to confirm the repair held
