BMW Service Reset: How to Reset CBS on Each Generation

How to reset the BMW service light (CBS) on E65, E90, F10 and F30 cars, what the dash cannot reset, and what changes on G-series cars.

Skanyx Team13 min read

The short answer

Drive with caution

A BMW service reset tells Condition Based Service (CBS) that a job is done. On most E-series and F-series cars you start it by holding the trip button on the cluster until the service items appear (5 to 10 seconds), and independent guides describe a similar method for G-series cars. Reset only after the work is done, because the car then stops reminding you.

How urgent
Next service, sooner if the car names brake pads
Likely cost
0 euros to reset it on the dash, about 40 euros for an app plus a 30 to 60 euro adapter, 100 to 250 euros if the item is brake pads
First step
Open Vehicle status and read which item the car names before you reset anything.
Key Takeaways(3)
  • A BMW service light is a reminder, not a fault, but a named brake pad item should be looked at this week
  • On E-, F- and G-series cars there is a reset from the instrument cluster after the work is done, but BMW recommends its diagnosis system
  • Resetting without doing the service hides the reminder and leaves a false record in the car

The garage changed the oil in your 2013 BMW 320d on Saturday. On Monday the dash still says the oil service is overdue, and every guide you open says something different. One says hold the trip button, one says you need a tool, and one says it fixes itself. A BMW service reset is easy on some cars and locked on others, and the answer depends on the car's generation.

Is it safe to drive with the BMW service light on?

Yes, for the reminder itself. A service light is not a fault code. BMW's maintenance booklet shows three states: no service required, a deadline that is approaching, and a deadline that has passed. These are reminder states, not fault warnings.

Look at which item the car names, because brake pads are the exception. BMW's training document for the E65 says that when the brake linings are worn, the general brake warning lamp comes on and the car shows "Service, see Vehicle menu". If your car names brake pads, book it in this week and read the brake warning light guide.

An engine light is a separate system. If that one is on too, start with the check engine light guide, not with a reset.

What does a BMW service reset cost?

The reset costs nothing on the dash. The tools and the service behind it do cost money, and the table shows what each route usually costs.

What you doWhat it usually costsGood to know
Reset on the dash yourself0 eurosOnly where the dash method works, and only after the work is done
Phone app plus a supported adapterBimmerLink about 40 euros once, adapter about 30 to 60 eurosCheck your model on the app's list first
App with the adapter includedCarly for BMW about 104 euros a yearService Reset is listed per generation, see the table below
Workshop or dealer with BMW's ISTA softwareAsk for it in the quoteNo source gives a standard price for the reset alone
New brake pads, one axle100 to 250 eurosThe reset needs new wear sensors on the pads
New pads and discs, one axle200 to 450 eurosLarge or electric-parking-brake axles cost more
Spark plugs, four-cylinder set60 to 250 eurosSix-cylinder engines cost more
App prices are the vendors' own figures and they change. Independent workshop prices include parts and labour. Quotes for an oil or brake fluid service vary by engine and workshop, and so does the vehicle check, so ask for a written quote that lists the reset as part of the job. Pad costs are in the brake pad cost guide and plug costs in the spark plug cost guide.

What should you do right now?

  1. Read which item the car names. On cars with iDrive, BMW's booklet gives the path: Vehicle Info (or CAR on some models), then Vehicle status, then Service required (or Service schedule). Note the colour and the item.
  2. Check the work was done. The invoice should name the item. For brake pads it should also say the wear sensors were replaced.
  3. Read the stored codes first. A service light is not a fault code, and a Bluetooth adapter and an app read what else is stored. Do that before you reset, so you do not clear a reminder on a car that has a real fault.
  4. Pick the reset route for your generation from the sections below.
  5. Check the result. After a good reset the item shows the full interval again.

What does BMW Condition Based Service track?

CBS is BMW's service reminder system. BMW's service bulletin says it works out each item from sensors and calculations that consider how the car is used, so one fixed interval does not apply.

The list differs by car. BMW's training document for the E65 lists ten items, from engine oil and brake pads to coolant, the vehicle check and two statutory inspections. A 2021 US maintenance booklet shows only five on the display, covering oil, brakes and the vehicle check. It says the microfilter and air filter follow the oil service count and stay off the display. Spark plugs do the same.

ItemHow the car decides it is due
Engine oilAn oil condition sensor, plus a calculation from engine load, fuel use, idle time and distance
Front and rear brake padsWear sensors on the pads, and on some cars a calculation from distance, wheel speed and braking
Brake fluidFixed time: the bulletin says after the first 3 years, then every 2 years
Microfilter and air filterCounted in oil services, for example every second oil service for the microfilter
Spark plugsDistance or oil service count, depending on the model and CBS version
Vehicle checkFixed distance
Statutory inspectionFixed time or distance, with dates a service provider enters
A service light tells you what is due, not whether the car has stored anything else. Skanyx reads the stored codes from a 15 to 30 euro Bluetooth adapter, explains each one in plain English with a green-to-red severity, and gives a rough repair cost in euros. It cannot reset a BMW service item, because that needs a BMW-capable tool. Read what your BMW has stored

How do you reset a BMW service light from the dashboard?

Reset only after the work is done. A Hella Pagid bulletin on BMW service resets says that a reset may only be performed after the service measure has been completed, and that a manual reset requires no open brake pad Check Control messages and correctly set on-board data. Close the doors and switch off unneeded consumers first.

E65 and E66 7 Series (2001 to 2008)

These steps come from BMW's own training document for the E65 and E66.

  1. Press the reset button on the top left of the instrument cluster and hold it for more than 10 seconds. The car goes straight to reset mode.
  2. Read the four-line menu in the speedometer. A "!" next to an item means you can reset it. A "0" means the car will not accept the reset yet.
  3. Press the reset button briefly, or the lower button on the turn signal lever, to move to the item you serviced.
  4. Hold the reset button for a few seconds. A two-line menu appears in the tachometer.
  5. Select the item with the reset button.
  6. Hold the reset button for a few seconds.
  7. Wait for the third line to confirm the reset.

E81 to E93 (2004 to 2013)

These steps come from the Hella Pagid bulletin for E81 to E93, and an E90 guide from FCP Euro gives the same pattern for the oil item.

  1. Close the doors.
  2. Switch on the ignition and wait about 10 seconds until the outside temperature and the time show.
  3. If another warning, such as fuel, shows first, confirm it with the BC button.
  4. Press the trip mileage reset button until the service data shows.
  5. Use the rocker switch on the indicator stalk until the service you want shows.
  6. Keep pressing the BC button until "RESET?" shows.
  7. Press the BC button again until the clock symbol disappears.
  8. Switch off the ignition.

F10 and F11 (2009 to 2017), and F30

These steps come from the Hella Pagid bulletin for the F10 and F11. An independent F30 guide describes the same sequence for the 3 Series and adds that you should not touch the pedals while starting the ignition.

  1. Switch on the ignition and wait until the time and temperature show.
  2. Hold the trip mileage reset button until the first service item appears.
  3. Press the button briefly to move through the items. "Reset can be performed" shows when a reset is possible.
  4. Hold the button for 3 seconds to start the reset.
  5. Hold it for another 3 seconds to confirm the message.
  6. Wait for the progress bar and "Resetting", then "Reset successful".

G-series (2015 on)

No BMW document we could read gives owner steps for G-series cars, and BMW's booklet only shows where to view the items. Three independent guides describe a cluster method. Press Start-Stop three times without touching the pedals (BimmerGuide and carwiki.de; another guide says twice). Then hold the trip button, or the BC button on the stalk, until the service items show. Confirm "Reset possible" by holding for 3 seconds. BimmerGuide adds three things: release the parking brake, switch off Auto Hold, and do not touch the brake pedal. It also says a brake pad item resets only once the pad's wear contact has been triggered; otherwise it needs the diagnosis system. No BMW document gives these owner steps.

What can the dashboard not reset?

  • Brake pads on old sensors. Hella says the brake pad item can only be reset with a new warning contact (the wear sensor in the pad).
  • Items that are too new. BMW's E65 training says the first 20 percent of a service interval is protected against an early reset. An independent F30 guide says an item must be at 90 percent or less of its life. The two figures differ, and neither is a rule for every car.
  • A frozen due date. BMW service bulletin B62 06 13 covers the F01/F02/F04 7 Series, F06/F12/F13 6 Series, F07/F10 5 Series, F25 X3 and F30 3 Series, where the due date for the oil service and vehicle check resets to 01/2000 and cannot be updated. BMW's fix is a software reset of the instrument cluster, then ISTA if the data is still wrong. No parts are replaced.
  • Statutory inspection dates. BMW's bulletin says the legal intervals for a country or state can only be coded with the diagnosis system. The E65 training shows an older way to enter them on the Control Display.
  • Time items after a disconnected battery. BMW's booklet says disconnecting the battery during long-term storage interrupts the time-based items, and recommends that a BMW centre brings them up to the correct date.

BMW's service bulletin also states that it is always recommended to reset the CBS jobs via the diagnosis system. That bulletin's attachments cover E-, F-, G-series and electric models, and they describe updating the key's service data, not an owner reset.

Which reset route works for your BMW generation?

The table below is our own count, made by reading Carly's BMW page on 26 October 2026. Carly lists the functions it supports for each chassis, and we checked which rows tick Service Reset. The count is of page rows, and a chassis can appear more than once.

GenerationReset from the dashCarly lists Service ResetWatch out for
E46 (1998 to 2007)A button method with the ignition off, per carwiki.deNoOlder service indicator, not CBS; no BMW document found

F30 and F31 (2011 to 2020)The same sequence (independent guide)YesReset needs the clock set and no open Check Control messages
G20 and G21 (2019 on)Not confirmed by a BMW documentNoIndependent guides only; BimmerGuide says pads reset only with a triggered wear contact
Across the whole page, Service Reset is ticked on 9 of 17 E-series rows, 15 of 17 F-series rows (one of them the MINI F5x/F6x row) and none of the 12 G-series rows. The E-series rows without it are mostly older cars (E36 to E53), plus the E83 and the E85/E86. The two F-series rows without it are the F40 and F44 (built from 2019 and 2020). A missing tick means Carly does not list the function, not that it cannot be done by other means.

BimmerLink's App Store listing says the app can reset service indicators after maintenance such as an oil change or brake pad replacement. It also says that feature availability depends on the vehicle and its equipment, and that a supported adapter is needed. ISTA is BMW's own workshop software and the route BMW's bulletin recommends. A trade article adds that on 2005 and newer cars, most inexpensive reset tools do not work with CBS. For a wider tool comparison, see the BMW scanner guide and the BMW fault codes guide. Battery swaps need their own step, covered in the BMW battery registration guide.

Can you reset it yourself, or is this a workshop job?

You can do it at home if:

  • The car is an E-series or F-series car and the work is finished.
  • The doors are closed, no Check Control message is open and the clock is right.
  • You know which item you serviced and will reset only that one.

Book a workshop when:

  • The dash refuses the reset or the due date is frozen.
  • The car is a G-series car and the guides' method does not work on yours.
  • You fitted brake pads and the item will not reset.
  • You want the reset recorded properly. A German BMW workshop says a dash reset usually sets one item back to its start value and leaves no complete, checkable service record, while ISTA resets each finished item and logs it. That is one shop's view, not BMW's.

A fair visit lists each item that was serviced and each item that was reset. Ask for the quote before the work, and see the diagnostic cost guide for what a workshop usually charges to read the car.

What happens if you reset without doing the service?

The car stops reminding you. BMW's training document says a reset returns the item to the full service interval, so nothing will warn you again until the next interval runs out.

Three documented effects follow:

  • Warranty. BMW's maintenance booklet says that damage, including consequential damage, which results from lack of or improper maintenance is not covered under the new vehicle warranty.
  • Wrong data. BMW's bulletin says CBS data can be incorrect because of accidental resets, and that each reset in ISTA adds one to the item's Service Counter. Several items follow the oil service count, so a reset without the work can shift those due dates too.
  • The record. The car stores its service status in the key, and the booklet says a BMW centre can read it. If you are buying a used BMW, ask for the invoices as well as the dash. The pre-purchase inspection guide covers what else to check.

Coming to Skanyx: reset a BMW service item from your phone

Today's Skanyx app reads generic OBD2 only and cannot reset a BMW service item. Skanyx is building a BMW feature that will.

With a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter in the car, you will tell the AI on your iPhone or Android phone, in plain words, that the service is done. It will check the conditions before it writes anything: nothing below 12.0 V, and a backup before any change. When you tap Apply, it will reset the service interval and read the result back. It will back up the original values first, so you can put them back.

You will not need a laptop or an ENET cable, and the adapters it is tested with will be named before launch. It will cover BMW and MINI built from 2007. Service interval reset will be part of one purchase for BMW that covers every BMW on your account, and the AI that runs it for you will come with Skanyx Pro. What each car can do depends on its model, year and equipment. Join the BMW waitlist and we will send you launch updates for your car.

What to do this week

Your 320d got its oil on Saturday, so the job left is small. Open Vehicle status, confirm the oil item is the one that is overdue, and reset only that item if the car accepts it from the dash. If the car refuses, book the reset with the next workshop visit and ask for it on the invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the BMW service light myself?
On many E-series and F-series cars, yes: you hold the trip button on the instrument cluster and confirm the reset once the work is done. BMW's own service bulletin says it is always recommended to reset through the diagnosis system. On G-series cars, independent guides describe a similar button method that starts by pressing Start-Stop three times.
Will the BMW service light go off by itself?
No. BMW's training document says that once service items have been performed, they must be reset to the full service interval, from the instrument cluster or with a diagnostic tool. Until then the reminder stays on and keeps counting.
Why won't my BMW service reset work?
The documented reasons start with an open Check Control message. A wrong clock or date also blocks it, as do brake pads reset without new wear sensors. Some items also refuse an early reset: BMW's E65 training says the first 20 percent of an interval is protected, and one independent F30 guide says the item must be at 90 percent or less of its life. On F-series cars a cluster software error can also freeze the due date, which BMW fixes with a cluster test function and its ISTA software.
Do I need to reset the service after changing brake pads?
Yes. A Hella Pagid bulletin says the new brake parameters must be communicated to the CBS system after new pads go on, and that the brake pad item can only be reset with a new warning contact (wear sensor). Replace the sensor when you replace the pads.
Can a normal OBD2 scanner reset a BMW service light?
Usually not. A trade article says most inexpensive reset tools do not work with the CBS system on 2005 and newer BMWs, and that you need a BMW factory tool or a scan tool that can reach CBS. A generic OBD2 code reader or app reads engine and emissions codes, not BMW service items.
Does resetting the service light clear the check engine light?
No. An independent F30 guide says the reset only zeroes the CBS counters and leaves engine faults in place. The engine light comes from a stored fault code, so read that code first.
What happens if I reset the BMW service without doing the service?
The car stops reminding you, and BMW's maintenance booklet says damage that results from lack of or improper maintenance is not covered by the new vehicle warranty. BMW's service bulletin also says accidental resets leave incorrect CBS data in the car, and a BMW centre can read the service status from the key.
