A 2013 Silverado cranks for eight seconds before it catches, and last week it went flat halfway up a freeway on-ramp. Those bands are wide because the published estimates are wide. AutoZone puts a typical job at $400 to $850 (roughly €370 to €790) and Kelley Blue Book at $390 to $900. AAA sits higher, at $1,150 to $1,400 for most vehicles, with luxury models well above that. The spread is real rather than sloppy reporting. The same repair on a sedan with a service hatch and on a full-size pickup with a full tank of fuel to deal with is genuinely two different jobs, and no single average describes both.

Why is fuel pump replacement labour so expensive?

Because on a lot of vehicles the only route to the pump is through the top of the fuel tank, and the tank is under the car.

Manufacturers who thought about servicing left an access panel under the rear seat cushion or the trunk floor. That split changes the shape of the bill. What does an OBD2 scan actually confirm about a failing fuel pump?

More than on most repairs, and still not everything.

What a generic OBD2 read gives you is codes. P0087, fuel rail or system pressure too low, is the direct one and the single best reason to scan this car before approving any quote. P0191, fuel rail pressure sensor range or performance, says the pressure signal itself is out of range, which can be the sensor rather than the pump and is a much cheaper repair. The honest limit is worth stating plainly. A generic scan does not measure fuel pressure in psi on most vehicles.
