The engine light came on in a 2013 Golf and the garage has quoted 320 euros for a new mass airflow sensor, the part that measures the air going into the engine. A German workshop calls it the Luftmassenmesser, and the short form on an English invoice is MAF. The car feels flat pulling away from a junction and the tank empties faster than it used to. The printout says P0101, and that code does not prove what the advisor thinks it proves.
Is it safe to drive with a faulty airflow sensor?
Yes, in almost every case. The engine falls back on an estimate of the air coming in, so the car still runs. It will feel flat, it will drink more fuel, and it may stumble as you pull away.
Two things end that answer. Stop and call for recovery if the engine light is flashing, because that points at unburnt fuel reaching the exhaust, and the part that cleans the exhaust costs far more than the sensor. What should you do right now?
- Open the air filter box and look at the filter. A filter black with dirt, or damp after a wet week, chokes the air the sensor is trying to measure. A new one is 10 to 40 euros and it is the cheapest thing on this page.
- Follow the pipe from the filter box to the engine. Squeeze it along its length and look at the underside. Check that every clip is tight. A split that only opens when the pipe flexes is easy to miss and cheap to fix.

- Book the car in with the code and the symptom written down, and ask for the quote to name the part and the labour hours separately. Ask whether a clean was priced. The diagnosis itself is the workshop's job.
What does a P0101 code actually prove?
It proves the engine is not getting the airflow figure it expects. It does not prove the sensor is broken.
The sensor sits in the pipe between the air filter and the engine and measures the air going past it. The engine's computer checks that figure against engine speed and load. When the two disagree, the code stores. Anything that changes the real airflow, or lets air in past the sensor, breaks that agreement just as well as a dead part does.
So the same code has several cheap causes. Here they are in the order an owner meets them:
- A choked or soaked air filter starves the sensor of the air it is trying to read.
- A split or loose pipe between the sensor and the engine lets in air the sensor never counted.
- A film of oil or dust on the sensing element makes it read low, which is common on cars with an oiled performance filter.
- A loose plug or a chafed wire interrupts the signal.
- The element itself ages and drifts, and no amount of cleaning brings it back.

Can you fix it yourself, or is this a workshop job?
The cheap causes are genuine home jobs, and the sensor is a two-screw part on most cars, which surprises people who have just been quoted 300 euros for it.
You can do this at home if the airbox sits on top of the engine and you have half an hour free. A screwdriver set covers the tools. A first-timer can change the filter and check the pipe clips. Book a workshop when the airbox is buried, when the fault returns after a new filter and a clean, or when the light is flashing. Is it worth cleaning the sensor before replacing it?
Usually yes, because the correct cleaner costs about 10 euros and the job takes fifteen minutes.
Cleaning works when the element is dirty. Oil mist and fine dust settle on it and the reading drifts low. Taking that film off restores it. It does not work when the element has aged or been damaged, and there is no way to tell those apart by looking.
The honest test is a week of driving. Clean the element and clear the code. Then drive normally and see whether the fault comes back. If it does, you have spent 10 euros to rule out the cheap answer, and the 90 to 250 euro sensor is now a decision rather than a guess. Use a cleaner made for the job. How do you know the airflow sensor is the problem?

Someone watches the airflow reading against engine load while the car is driven, then checks the wiring at the plug and the pipe from underneath. That is hands-on work, and no code read replaces it. Will a new sensor make the light go out?
Only if the sensor was the fault. Fit one over a split pipe and the light is back within a few days of driving.
The lamp also does not go out the moment the part is fitted. The car has to finish its own self-tests over several journeys first, and clearing the code with a scanner only starts that clock again.
