The check engine light came on this morning. The car drives exactly as it did yesterday, and you are sitting in the car park scrolling through scanners. Prices run from twelve dollars to two hundred. Every listing promises to read the code, and not one of them tells you whether you need to buy anything at all.
Do you need an OBD2 scanner for a check engine light?
You need the code. You do not always need to own the thing that reads it.
There are three ways to get the same four characters out of your car, and they cost very different amounts.
- A parts store, free. Most US chains read the code in the car park and hand you a printout. AutoZone's version is called Fix Finder and the read itself takes about a minute.
- Your own adapter and your phone, about $15 to $30, once. A small plug-in dongle talks to a free app over Bluetooth. It lives in the glovebox and works on every car in the house.

For most people with a steady amber light, the sensible order is cheap first. Get the code for nothing or for the price of a takeaway. Pay a shop later, once you know what the code says.
Where is the port, and what does a code look like?
The socket sits under the dash on the driver's side, roughly at knee height, within reach of the pedals. It is a flat trapezoid with 16 pins. A stored code is a letter and four numbers. The letter says which part of the car spoke up, and P covers the engine and its emissions gear, which is where check engine lights come from. The four numbers name the fault.
Two you will meet often:
- P0420 says the exhaust cleaner under the car is not working as well as the car expects.
- P0171 says the engine is getting more air than it expects, which can be a $4 split hose or a tired fuel pump.
That is the useful thing and the frustrating thing about codes at the same time. A code names the fault, not the part to buy.
What does an OBD2 scanner actually show you?
The stored code is only the first screen. Below is what the three kinds of tool give you, and the differences are bigger than the price tags suggest.

How do you read the codes yourself?
Five steps. Allow five minutes the first time and about ninety seconds after that.
- Find the socket. Sit in the driver's seat, look low and under the dash on your side of the car, and feel along with a hand. A torch helps. It only fits one way round, so you cannot plug it in wrong.
- Plug the adapter in, then switch the ignition on. Turn the key to the point where the dash lights up but the engine stays off. On a keyless car, press start once without touching the brake.
- Pair it to your phone. The adapter shows up over Bluetooth with a name like OBDII. If it asks for a PIN, the usual ones are 1234 and 0000, and a good app tries those for you. If pairing fails, unplug it and put it back in after five seconds.
- Read the stored code. An app on your phone pulls it in about a minute, and turns four characters into a named fault with a severity, so "the light is on" becomes something you can act on.
- Write the code down before you touch anything. Photograph the screen. If you clear the light and the code goes with it, you have thrown away the only evidence.

What can a cheap code reader not do?
This is where the marketing gets loose, so here is the honest edge of it.
It reads the engine and emissions side only. Those are the codes behind the overwhelming majority of check engine lights. If your brake warning light, airbag light or transmission warning is the one lit up, a generic reader will not show you that fault, because those computers speak languages of their own. Switching a part on to see if it moves, resetting a service interval, unlocking a hidden feature: all of that needs brand software or a workshop tool. It does not fix anything. A reader is a thermometer, not a cure. Clearing a code switches the light off and leaves the fault exactly where it was. It cannot tell two faults with the same code apart. A worn spark plug and a burnt valve both set a misfire code. The code narrows the search to one cylinder. Somebody still has to look.One practical warning about the very cheap end. The $8 listings are usually copies of a copy, and they drop the Bluetooth link halfway through a scan or refuse to pair at all. Spending $15 to $25 with a seller who takes returns buys you a dongle that connects first time, which is the whole point of owning one. The chip inside is the same standard design either way, so you are paying for build quality rather than for extra features.
Will a parts store read the check engine light for free?
Yes, at most US chains, and it is a genuine free read rather than a trick. What it is not is a diagnosis. The staff member plugs in a reader, prints the code with a list of common causes, and points at a shelf. That is the same 30 second job you could do in your own driveway.
So why own one at all? Four reasons that the counter cannot cover.

Will clearing the code turn the check engine light off for good?
Only if the fault has actually gone. Otherwise the light returns, usually within a few dozen miles, because the car re-runs the test that failed.
Clearing costs you two things people rarely think about. It wipes the freeze frame, which is the snapshot a mechanic would have used. It also resets the emissions self-tests, and those take days of ordinary driving to finish again. Some faults will sit there for months without hurting anything, and others quietly cook an expensive part while the car still drives fine. Then you can decide whether this is a cap you tighten in the driveway or a booking worth making, instead of buying hardware to find out.
