There is a dark patch on the garage floor that was not there in the spring. The dipstick reads half a quart down between changes. The last invoice says "engine oil leak, recommend further diagnosis" with no number next to it. Ten minutes of searching produces a $200 answer and a $2,000 answer on the same page, both from sources that sound equally confident.

Both are right. They are describing different repairs that happen to share a name.

Is it safe to drive with an oil leak?

That depends on the rate, not on the source, and for most leaks the honest answer is yes, for a while. Add less than a quart between oil changes, with the level never near the minimum mark, and you have a seep. Check the dipstick weekly and book the repair when it suits you.

A quart every 500 to 1,000 miles is a different situation. The engine can run itself dry in the gap between your checks. Write down what you add and when, because the number decides this, not the size of the stain.

Three things override the rate and mean the leak gets fixed now:

Those bands match what the published US estimators show.   1. Park over clean flattened cardboard for two nights and look in the morning. Drips mean a leak. A clean sheet with a falling dipstick means the engine is burning oil instead, which is a different repair entirely.

  3. Decide with the code in hand. Nothing stored means this is still a sealing job. A stored P0520 or P0521 means the pressure side is already involved, and that is an engine conversation rather than a gasket one.

What is the most common spot for oil leaks?

  • Oil pan gasket - The joint between the sump and the block. Access decides the price completely, which is why the same gasket is $400 on one car and $800 on another.
  • Front crankshaft seal - Where the crankshaft exits the front of the engine to drive the belt or chain. The seal is $20 to $100 and the labour is everything, because the pulley and usually the timing cover have to come off. If the car is due a timing belt or the timing chain is being touched, this seal should go in at the same visit.
  • Rear main seal - The other end of the same crankshaft, sealing against the gearbox. It has its own section below.
  • Turbo oil feed and return lines - On turbocharged engines these carry hot oil to and from the turbo bearing housing, and the lines harden and weep at their fittings. They drip onto the hottest surface in the engine bay, so this leak gets promoted to urgent faster than the others.

One more source is not a seal at all, and it catches people out constantly. A blocked crankcase ventilation valve cannot vent the pressure that combustion pushes past the piston rings. That pressure has nowhere to go, so it forces oil out past whichever seal is weakest, usually the valve cover. Can you fix it yourself, or is this a workshop job?

Two of these are genuine home jobs. The rest are not, and the dividing line is whether the crankshaft is involved.

You can do this at home if you are dealing with a drain plug washer, a hand-tight oil filter, an overfilled sump, or a crankcase ventilation valve you can reach with hand tools. Those four account for a surprising share of "leaks" that appear within a week of an oil change, and none of them costs more than about $60 in parts. A valve cover gasket is within reach for a confident home mechanic on a simple four-cylinder engine, as long as you torque the cover properly and expect to clean the plug wells.

Book a workshop for anything that needs the car in the air, anything at either end of the crankshaft, and anything where the seal only becomes visible once something else comes off. Why does a rear main seal cost ten times a valve cover gasket?

Because you are not paying for the seal. You are paying for the removal of the transmission.

The rear main seal is a rubber ring, $30 to $150 over the counter, that seals the back of the crankshaft where it passes into the bellhousing. Nothing about the part is special. The gearbox is bolted to that face, though, so reaching the seal means supporting the engine and pulling the transmission out of the car. Six to ten hours of labour is the normal booking, and four-wheel drive takes longer.

So the one question that matters on this quote is what else comes off with it. Can a scan tool find an oil leak?

No, and any tool that claims otherwise is overselling. An oil leak is a rubber seal that has stopped sealing. There is no sensor between that gasket and the ground and no oil-leak fault code, so a car with oil running down the back of the block returns a completely clean scan.

Finding the source is physical work. Get the car on a lift, degrease everything so the existing mess stops confusing the picture, add a UV dye to the oil at $20 to $40, drive it a hundred miles, then come back with a UV lamp and look for where it glows. P0520 and P0521 are the oil pressure sensor and switch codes, and they are ambiguous by design.
