What are the signs of a bad radiator?
Radiators fail in a few distinct ways, and which one you have decides both the symptom and the bill.
- A split plastic end tank - The classic modern failure. Almost every radiator built in the last thirty years is an aluminium core with plastic tanks crimped onto each end, and that plastic spends its whole life cycling between cold and around 220 degrees F. After eight to fifteen years it goes brittle and cracks, usually along the crimp seam or around a hose neck. You see a coloured crust, a drip, or a puddle under the nose of the car.
- A blocked core - Bugs and leaves pack the face from outside; neglected coolant leaves scale and sediment that silts up the tubes from inside. Either way the radiator cannot shed heat, and the giveaway is an engine that runs hot in traffic and cools off as soon as you are moving.
- A failed internal transmission cooler - On a lot of automatics the gearbox oil cooler lives inside one of the radiator's end tanks. - Cold patches across the core - With the engine warm, an infrared thermometer swept across the face should show a fairly even gradient from inlet side to outlet side. Cold patches mean tubes that are no longer passing coolant.
