How do you tell if your transmission is slipping?
The tachometer is the instrument that answers this, not your ears.
In a healthy automatic, engine speed and road speed move together in a fixed relationship for whichever gear you are in. When the transmission slips, the clutch pack that should be locking that gear together is letting go under load, so the engine accelerates freely while the wheels do not get the extra power. The revs go up, the noise goes up, the speedometer does not keep pace. On a car with a big enough gap you will see the tach jump 500 RPM or more with no matching change on the speedometer needle.
This is worth separating from a car that is merely slow, because the two get confused constantly and lead in opposite directions. A slipping transmission makes the engine rev and the car stay put. If the tach and the speedo are still moving in step, the transmission is probably not your problem.
The symptoms that travel with slipping:
- A delay between Drive and moving. Select Drive, wait a full second or more before the car takes up. Often low fluid pressure. Reverse frequently shows it first.

On a manual car none of the above applies in the same way. Revs that climb without the car following mean the clutch friction plate is worn rather than anything inside the gearbox, and the fix is a clutch replacement. If the complaint is a rattle rather than a slip, and pressing the clutch pedal silences it, look at the dual mass flywheel instead.
Check the fluid before you spend anything
Automatic transmission fluid does the work in an automatic. It carries the hydraulic pressure that clamps the clutch packs shut, and it lubricates and carries heat away while doing it. When the level drops or the fluid degrades, the clutches stop being held firmly enough and they slip. This is why the fluid check comes first. Three things to read: level, colour and smell.
Level. On a car with a dipstick, warm the engine to operating temperature and park on level ground. Fresh fluid cannot put friction material back onto a worn clutch pack, so on a badly slipping high-mileage unit the service is a gamble rather than maintenance, and it is a gamble worth taking only because it is cheap. A fine, rapid vibration at a steady 30 to 50 mph under light throttle, of the kind people describe as driving over a rumble strip, that disappears the moment you accelerate hard or lift off entirely, is almost never the gearbox. It is the torque converter lock-up clutch judder as it tries to clamp on worn friction material. The separation is clean once you know what to listen for. Slipping is load-dependent: it shows up when you ask the car for power, at any speed. Converter shudder is speed-specific and light-throttle-specific: it lives inside a narrow band around 30 to 50 mph and vanishes when you demand more. If your symptom disappears under hard acceleration, you are almost certainly not describing a slipping transmission.
The reason to care is money. A converter-side fault is frequently a solenoid or degraded fluid, and even a converter replacement sits well below a rebuild. Walking into a shop saying "it slips" when what it does is shudder at 40 mph invites a quote for the wrong repair.

Does a CVT slip like a regular automatic?
No, and the difference is worth understanding before you treat a CVT complaint the way you would treat a conventional one.
A continuously variable transmission has no fixed gears. A steel push-belt or chain runs between two pulleys whose faces move closer together or further apart to change the effective ratio, and the fluid's job includes providing the specific friction characteristics that let the belt grip those faces. CVT fluid is not ATF and it is not interchangeable between manufacturers, and using the wrong specification produces the exact symptom this section is about.
When a CVT slips, the belt is momentarily losing grip on a pulley face and then re-gripping. That does not feel like the smooth rev flare of a conventional automatic. It feels like a judder or shudder under medium throttle, often with a drone that rises with load, and owners frequently describe it as the car hunting or surging rather than as slipping at all.
The reason it is more serious: every slip event marks the pulley faces. Can a scan tool tell me why the transmission is slipping?
Partly, and the limit here is sharper than on almost any other repair, so it is worth being exact rather than vague.
What a generic OBD2 scan gives you is whether the transmission has raised a fault at all, plus whether anything engine-side is stored next to it. The code you will usually see is P0700, and the single most important thing to know about it is that it is not a fault description. P0700 is the transmission control module asking the engine control module to switch the dashboard light on. Translated, it says "I have logged something, come and look inside me". A shop that reads a P0700 and quotes a rebuild off the back of it has not diagnosed anything yet.
Some vehicles do report the standard transmission codes on the generic side, and those are more useful. P0705 is a range sensor that no longer knows which position the selector is in. P0715 is the input or turbine speed sensor and P0720 is the output speed sensor, and either one can make a perfectly healthy transmission behave like a slipping one, because the module is calculating the gear ratio from readings it should not trust. P0741 is the torque converter clutch failing to lock. Every one of those names a part rather than a system, and most of them are three figures rather than four.
The transmission module's own stored codes are the part a generic read cannot reach, and that is where the detailed fault sits on most vehicles.
