What does P0705 mean?

P0705 means the PCM is seeing an invalid or impossible gear-position signal from the transmission range sensor. The computer no longer knows which gear you've selected, so it defaults to safe shift maps and often disables the starter in some positions.

P0705 is a transmission-related diagnostic trouble code classified as high severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P0705 and illuminates the check engine light.

What are the symptoms of P0705?

If your vehicle has triggered P0705, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Engine cranks in Neutral but not Park (or the reverse)
  • PRNDL indicator on the dash shows the wrong gear or blanks out
  • Reverse lights stay off when you shift into R
  • Transmission locked in one gear (typically 3rd) as fail-safe
  • Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, or delayed engagement from Park
  • Speedometer reads zero or erratic on GM 4L60E/4L65E variants
  • Check Engine light with P0705 stored, often alongside P0700

What causes P0705?

Is it safe to drive with P0705?

No - address this immediately. You can usually limp home, but the transmission often drops into fail-safe (stuck in 3rd or 4th), reverse lights may not work, and the starter interlock can misbehave. Don't take it on the motorway before it's fixed.

How do you diagnose P0705?

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0705:

  1. Pull all stored codes plus freeze frame, note any companion codes like P0700, P0715 or P0720
  2. With a scan tool watching the gear position PID, shift slowly through P-R-N-D-2-1 and confirm each position matches the shifter
  3. Check shift cable adjustment: the shifter detent must land dead centre in each transmission position, not on the edge
  4. Inspect the range sensor connector for ATF intrusion, green corrosion, or spread pins
  5. Back-probe the sensor: verify 5V reference and clean ground with a multimeter
  6. Measure sensor resistance or voltage in each gear against the factory table (values differ per manufacturer)
  7. Wiggle-test the harness between sensor and PCM while watching live data to catch intermittent breaks
  8. Only if sensor, wiring, and grounds all pass, verify PCM/TCM power and consider module fault

Ford F-150

2004-2014

The digital TR sensor on 4R70W, 4R75W and 5R55 transmissions is a documented weak point. Intermittent P0705 from internal sensor wear is common on 5.4L Triton trucks.

Toyota Camry

2002-2011

U140E and U240E transaxles use an external park/neutral position switch bolted to the manual valve shaft. Adjustment requires aligning the switch groove with the neutral basic line, torque 5.4 Nm.

VW Golf

2005-2014

09G Aisin autos (Mk5/Mk6 2.5L, 1.4 TSI) commonly fail the multifunction switch F125 on top of the valve body. DSG (02E/DQ250) integrates the sensor into the mechatronic and P0705 usually points to mechatronic wear.

BMW 3-Series

2006-2013

E90/E91 with ZF 6HP19/6HP21: the range sensor lives inside the mechatronic unit. The well-known mechatronic sleeve (adapter) leak dumps ATF into the connector and takes the sensor with it.

Honda Civic

2006-2015

8th and 9th gen Civics with the 5-speed auto: the transmission range switch sits on top of the transaxle. Honda service data requires aligning the switch's neutral index mark with the shaft mark within +/-1 mm.

Common questions about P0705

Can I drive with P0705 or should I tow it?

Short local drives are usually fine if the trans still engages, but it's often stuck in fail-safe (one gear, no downshifts) and reverse lights may be dead. For anything over a few kilometres or highway speeds, get it fixed or towed.

Why does my car start in Neutral but not Park with P0705?

The range sensor doubles as the neutral safety switch. If it's misaligned or worn, the PCM sees Park as invalid but still reads Neutral correctly, so cranking only works in N. It's the classic symptom of a bad or misadjusted TR sensor.

Will adjusting the shift linkage fix P0705 without replacing parts?

Often yes. Loosen the sensor bolts with the shifter in Neutral, align the mark on the sensor with the shaft flat, and retighten. On Fords and Toyotas this fixes maybe half the P0705s I've seen, no parts needed.

Is P0705 the same fault as P0706?

Related but not identical. P0705 is a digital/PRNDL circuit fault (implausible combination), P0706 is a range/performance issue on the same sensor. Diagnosis overlaps but P0706 usually means the signal is in-range but wrong for the selected gear.

Can a weak battery or bad ground trigger P0705?

Yes. Low cranking voltage or a corroded PCM ground can set transmission codes including P0705. Check battery voltage and clean the engine-to-body ground straps before condemning the sensor.
