2000-2006The M54 in the 325i and 330i is an inline-six, but its exhaust is split in two: BMW's training material describes catalytic converters built into the exhaust manifolds, with a narrowband (Bosch LSH 25) pre-cat sensor on top of each manifold, and the MS43 engine management runs a separate mixture control for each half. Cylinders 1-3 are bank 1 and cylinders 4-6 are bank 2, and BMW parts listings name the bank 2 pre-cat sensor as the one for cylinders 4-6, so a bank 2 code on this car is genuine and points at the pre-cat sensor for the rear three cylinders. If the cylinder 4-6 sensor reading stays flat while the cylinder 1-3 sensor switches, test that sensor's plug, heater supply and wiring first.

- Read all stored codes. A heater code on the same sensor (P0155) often explains P0154, because an unheated sensor may never become active
- Warm the engine fully and watch Bank 2 Sensor 1 on live data. A reading that sits flat around 0.45 volts or does not change at all while Bank 1 Sensor 1 switches confirms no activity on bank 2
- Inspect the bank 2 connector for corrosion, melted plastic, pushed-back pins or a plug that is not fully seated
- With the key on and engine off, back-probe the plug and confirm battery voltage on the heater supply and a good ground
- Check signal and ground wire continuity from the sensor plug back to the engine computer with a multimeter and the wiring diagram
- Measure the heater resistance across the heater pins of the sensor; an open reading means a dead heater
- If the wiring, supply and heater check out, replace the sensor, clear the code and confirm it stays off after a drive cycle
