2005-2013The N52 and N54 straight sixes in the E90-generation 3 Series split the exhaust into two groups of three cylinders, each with its own catalytic converter and post-catalyst sensor, so they can log bank 2 codes even though the engine is not a V. Bank 2 means cylinders 4-6, and BMW lists the bank 1 and bank 2 downstream sensors for the N52 and N54 as different parts, so order by bank.
BMW 5 Series
2003-2010On the N62 V8 in the 545i, 540i and 550i, each cylinder bank has its own catalytic converter built into the exhaust manifold, with one sensor before it and one after it; bank 2 is cylinders 5-8. The downstream sensor is a conventional switching type while the upstream one is a broadband sensor, so the two are not interchangeable.

- On engines with a switching (narrowband) upstream sensor, a bank 2 downstream sensor that copies the switching of its upstream sensor means the bank 2 converter is likely failing. If it is erratic or stuck while the bank 1 downstream sensor looks normal, the sensor or its wiring is the likely fault
