P0200: Injector Circuit/Open

Quick Answer

Safe to drive (short-term)

P0200 means the engine computer found a fault in the injector circuit as a whole, not in one named cylinder. It sees an open circuit, a short or a resistance outside its limits on the wiring or driver that controls the fuel injectors. Codes P0201 and up name a single cylinder; P0200 is the general one. Some makes use it when the fault is common to all the injectors, such as a shared supply, ground or driver, so a connector, fuse or the engine computer itself is a real possibility.

What does P0200 mean?

P0200 is a fuel system-related diagnostic trouble code classified as moderate severity.

What are the symptoms of P0200?

  • Check engine light on
  • Misfire, rough running or engine shaking
  • Loss of power or hesitation
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Smell of fuel or black smoke if an injector stays open
  • Misfire codes or single-cylinder injector codes stored with it

What causes P0200?

  • Faulty fuel injector with an open or shorted coil

    : high

  • Damaged, corroded or loose injector connector or wiring

    : high

  • Shared supply, fuse, relay or ground fault feeding the injector circuit

    : medium

  • Chafed harness shorting against engine parts

    : medium

  • Low battery voltage at start-up

    : low

  • Engine computer injector driver fault (rare)

    : low

Is it safe to drive with P0200?

Generally yes, for short-term driving. You can usually drive gently to a workshop, but one or more injectors may not be firing correctly, which can cause misfires and unburnt fuel reaching the catalytic converter. Keep the load low. On a diesel, avoid driving far with this code. If the check engine light starts flashing or the engine shakes badly, stop driving.

How do you diagnose P0200?

  1. Read all stored codes and the freeze frame. If P0201 and up or misfire codes are stored, they show which cylinder to start with. If none are, the fault may be common to all injectors.
  2. Check the battery voltage and the fuses and relays that feed the injectors, using the wiring diagram for the car.
  3. Inspect each injector connector and the harness along the engine for corrosion, bent pins, chafing and oil. A loose clip is common after earlier work.
  4. With the ignition off, measure each injector's coil resistance and compare it with the specification for that engine. An open reading means a dead injector; a reading far off the others means a fault. Use the workshop value, because it differs between petrol and diesel injectors.
  5. With the ignition on, check for the supply voltage at the injector plugs and for a good ground path on the control wire.
  6. To find a bad injector, swap it with one from another cylinder and see whether the fault follows it. This tells an injector fault from a wiring fault. On a diesel, a replacement injector must normally be coded to the engine computer.
  7. If the injectors and wiring are good, suspect the engine computer. Confirming that needs manufacturer-level software; a generic OBD2 reader reads the code and freeze frame but cannot command or test an injector.

How much does P0200 cost to fix?

Repair Parts Cost Labor Cost Total Estimate DIY Difficulty
Repair injector connector or wiring €5–€40 €60–€180 €65–€220 Moderate
Replace fuse or relay in the injector supply €5–€25 €20–€60 €25–€85 Easy
Replace one petrol injector €60–€250 €60–€150 €120–€400 Moderate
Replace one diesel injector (new or reconditioned, plus coding) €80–€450 €170–€200 €250–€650 Professional
Engine computer repair or replacement (worst case) €200–€800 €100–€250 €300–€1050 Professional

Common questions about P0200

What does P0200 mean?
P0200 means the engine computer found a fault in the injector circuit overall. It is the general injector code. Codes P0201 and higher point at a particular cylinder.
How is P0200 different from P0201?
P0201 names cylinder 1's injector circuit. P0200 does not name a cylinder, so on some cars it points to something shared, such as a fuse, relay, ground or the driver in the engine computer, as well as to an injector.
Can I drive with P0200?
Gently and only as far as a workshop. A misfire sends unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, which can damage it, and a diesel injector fault can harm the particulate filter. Stop if the light flashes.
Do I always need a new injector?
No. A connector, a harness fault or a fuse can set the same code, and those are cheaper. Test the wiring and the injector's resistance, and swap injectors between cylinders, before ordering a part.
Why does a new diesel injector need coding?
Diesel injectors differ slightly from one another, and the engine computer stores a correction value for each. A new injector needs its value entered with the right tool, which is why diesel injector jobs cost more.
