Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0480:

  1. Pull all codes and note siblings (P0481, P0482, P0691, P0692) - they narrow down which side of the circuit failed
  2. Check the fan maxi-fuse and any smaller control fuse in the underhood box before touching anything else
  3. Turn A/C to max with engine idling and confirm whether the primary fan actually spins up within 30 seconds
  4. Swap the fan relay with an identical relay elsewhere in the fuse box and retest
  5. Back-probe the fan connector: verify battery voltage on the supply pin and a good ground path when the ECM commands the fan on
  6. If voltage reaches the fan but nothing happens, jumper 12V directly to the motor terminals - if it still won't run, the motor is dead
  7. If voltage never reaches the fan, trace the control wire back through the relay or PWM module to the ECM driver pin
  8. Clear the code and monitor commanded vs actual fan duty cycle with a live-data scan tool through a full warm-up

Common questions about P0480

Can I still drive with P0480 if the temperature gauge looks normal?

On the highway, briefly. Ram air through the radiator does most of the cooling above 60 km/h. But in traffic or at idle you'll overheat within 5 to 10 minutes, and a warped head or blown gasket runs €1,500 or more.

Why does my fan run at full speed all the time with P0480 stored?

Most ECMs default the fan to 100% as a fail-safe when they lose control authority over the circuit. It protects the engine while the fault is present and it's a strong hint the control side (relay, module, or driver) failed rather than the motor itself.

Will replacing the fan relay definitely fix P0480?

It's the single most common fix, roughly 40% of the cases I've seen, but not guaranteed. Test-swap the relay with an identical one from the same fuse box before buying anything. If that doesn't restore normal operation, move to the fuse, then the motor, then the wiring.

Does P0480 knock out the A/C too?

Usually yes. On most cars the primary fan doubles as the condenser fan. When it won't run, high-side pressure spikes at idle and the ECM either commands the compressor off or you just get warm air until you start moving.

Can a bad coolant temperature sensor cause P0480?

Not directly. P0480 is a circuit-side electrical fault. A bad ECT sensor throws P0117 or P0118 and can make the fan behave oddly, but the ECM won't set P0480 unless it sees an actual open, short, or wrong feedback on the fan control line.
