P2291: Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking

Quick Answer

Not safe to drive

P2291 means the pressure that operates the injectors stayed below the manufacturer's minimum while the engine was cranking, so the engine starts late or not at all. In the SAE wording this is injector control pressure, which on oil-operated (HEUI) diesels such as the Ford 6.0 Power Stroke is engine oil pressurised by a high-pressure oil pump. Makers of common-rail engines that use the code apply it to rail pressure that builds too slowly during cranking, and the exact meaning can differ by manufacturer.

What does P2291 mean?

P2291 is a fuel system-related diagnostic trouble code classified as high severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P2291 and illuminates the check engine light.

What are the symptoms of P2291?

If your vehicle has triggered P2291, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Long cranking before the engine starts
  • Engine will not start, especially cold
  • Engine starts then stalls
  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or lack of power once running
  • Starts better after pumping the primer or after a few attempts

What causes P2291?

Here are the most common causes of P2291:

  • Air in the fuel system or an empty tank, for example after a filter change (common rail)

    : high

  • Clogged fuel filter or weak low-pressure (lift) pump

    : high

  • Low engine oil level or a failing high-pressure oil pump on HEUI diesels

    : medium

  • Worn high-pressure fuel pump or its pressure control valve

    : medium

  • Injectors leaking internally, so pressure escapes as fast as it is built

    : medium

  • Faulty pressure sensor or wiring giving a false low reading

    : low

  • Weak battery or slow cranking speed

    : low

Is it safe to drive with P2291?

No - address this immediately. Do not rely on the car. The code is set during starting, so the usual result is a long crank or a no-start, and a car that does start may stall again. If it starts and runs normally, drive only to a workshop and keep off motorways. On a common-rail diesel, ask whether the fuel filter was changed recently: air left in the system stops pressure building.

How do you diagnose P2291?

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P2291:

  1. Start with the basics: fuel in the tank, engine oil level and battery condition. Slow cranking from a weak battery lowers the pressure the pump can build
  2. Ask whether the fuel filter was changed or the tank ran dry recently. Air in the fuel system has to be bled the way the service manual describes for that engine
  3. Read the stored code and freeze frame with an OBD2 reader, and check for other rail pressure, injector or crank sensor codes
  4. Watch engine rpm on the reader while cranking. A reading of zero usually means the control unit is not seeing a crank signal, and on most engines that stops injection whatever the pressure
  5. If your reader shows fuel rail pressure, watch it during cranking: it should climb quickly. The minimum needed to start depends on the engine and is in the manufacturer's data. Injector control pressure on HEUI engines and injector leak-off need manufacturer-level software or workshop gauges
  6. Check the pressure sensor and its wiring before condemning the high-pressure pump, because a sensor that reads low sets the same code

How much does P2291 cost to fix?

Repair costs for P2291 vary depending on the root cause and your vehicle. Here are typical estimates:

Repair Parts Cost Labor Cost Total Estimate DIY Difficulty
Replace fuel filter and bleed the system (diesel) €20–€60 €40–€100 €60–€160 Moderate
Replace in-tank low-pressure fuel pump €80–€350 €120–€550 €200–€900 Professional
Replace fuel rail pressure sensor €30–€130 €30–€90 €60–€220 Moderate
Replace one diesel injector €150–€450 €100–€200 €250–€650 Professional
Replace high-pressure diesel fuel pump €600–€1700 €300–€800 €900–€2500 Professional

Prices estimated as of March 2026. Costs vary by region, vehicle, and shop.

Common questions about P2291

What does P2291 mean?
P2291 means injector control pressure was too low while the engine was cranking. On oil-operated (HEUI) diesels that is the oil pressure that fires the injectors; on common-rail engines that use the code it is rail pressure that did not rise fast enough to start the engine.
Can I drive with P2291?
Only if the engine starts and runs normally, and then only to a workshop. The cause can stall the engine, and a car that fails to start leaves you stranded.
Can low engine oil cause P2291?
On diesels that use engine oil to drive the injectors, yes. Low oil level or oil pressure can stop the pressure building. Check the oil level first on any car that sets this code.
Can a new fuel filter cause P2291?
On a common-rail diesel, yes. If air gets in when the filter is changed and the system is not bled correctly, the high-pressure pump cannot build pressure while cranking. Priming and bleeding the system as the manual describes is the first fix to try.
How much does it cost to fix P2291?
A filter change and bleed is about 60-160 EUR. A low-pressure pump runs about 200-900 EUR, a rail pressure sensor 60-220 EUR, an injector 250-650 EUR and a diesel high-pressure pump 900-2,500 EUR.
