P2562: Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor "A" Circuit

Quick Answer

Not safe to drive

P2562 means the electrical signal from the turbo's position sensor is missing or impossible: an open wire, a short, or a lost 5 V supply. That sensor tells the engine computer where the variable vanes or the wastegate are, and on many engines it is built into the turbo's actuator. Because this is a circuit code, start with plugs and wires before suspecting the turbo itself. With no position feedback the computer usually limits power.

What does P2562 mean?

P2562 is a fuel system-related diagnostic trouble code classified as moderate severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P2562 and illuminates the check engine light.

What are the symptoms of P2562?

If your vehicle has triggered P2562, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Check engine light, usually with a power-reduction warning
  • Power capped from the moment the fault sets, not only under heavy load
  • Weak pulling at low and middle revs
  • Fault that comes and goes over bumps or as the engine bay heats up
  • Other sensor circuit codes at the same time when a shared 5 V supply is at fault
  • P2563 or P0299 stored alongside on some cars

What causes P2562?

Here are the most common causes of P2562:

  • Corroded, wet or loose plug at the position sensor or electronic actuator

    : high

  • Position sensor failed, or an electronic actuator whose built-in sensor has failed

    : high

  • Signal or ground wire chafed through or heat-damaged near the turbo

    : medium

  • Lost 5 V reference, sometimes shared with other sensors on the same supply

    : medium

  • Water or oil that has wicked into the connector

    : low

  • Engine computer fault (rare)

    : low

Is it safe to drive with P2562?

No - address this immediately. Gentle driving to a workshop is usually possible. Without a usable position signal the engine computer cannot check where the turbo's vanes or wastegate are, so it normally caps power and may hold the turbo in a safe default position. Expect weak acceleration. Keep away from towing and full throttle, and if the car surges and then suddenly loses power, stop and have it towed.

How do you diagnose P2562?

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P2562:

  1. Read every stored code and the freeze frame. If several sensor circuit codes appeared together, test the shared 5 V reference first. P2564 or P2565, where the engine logs them, say whether the signal was stuck low or high.
  2. Work out where the position sensor lives on your engine. On many diesels with variable vanes it sits inside the electronic actuator bolted to the turbo, while on some petrol turbos it reads the wastegate rod.
  3. Unplug the sensor or actuator and inspect both halves of the plug for green corrosion, water, oil and terminals pushed back. Then follow the harness along the turbo and exhaust looking for melted or rubbed-through insulation.
  4. With the ignition on and the plug disconnected, use a multimeter to confirm about 5 V on the reference pin and a sound ground. Then check the signal wire for continuity back to the engine computer.
  5. With everything reconnected, wiggle the harness while a helper watches whether the code returns or the warning comes on. An intermittent break usually shows up this way.
  6. A generic OBD2 reader shows the codes, the freeze frame and boost readings. Live position readings, actuator sweep tests and the adaptation a new actuator or turbo needs require manufacturer-level software.
  7. After the repair, clear the code and drive under load to confirm boost now builds normally and the code stays away.

How much does P2562 cost to fix?

Repair costs for P2562 vary depending on the root cause and your vehicle. Here are typical estimates:

Repair Parts Cost Labor Cost Total Estimate DIY Difficulty
Clean and reseat position sensor or actuator connector €0–€10 €0–€40 €0–€50 Easy
Repair position sensor or actuator wiring or connector €10–€40 €60–€180 €70–€220 Moderate
Replace electronic turbo actuator or position sensor €60–€250 €80–€250 €140–€500 Professional
Replace turbocharger (when the sensor or actuator is not sold separately) €400–€1500 €300–€800 €700–€2300 Professional

Prices estimated as of March 2026. Costs vary by region, vehicle, and shop.

Common questions about P2562

What does P2562 mean?
P2562 means the engine computer has lost a usable electrical signal from the sensor that reports the position of the turbo's variable vanes or wastegate. The cause is an open wire, a short, a lost supply or a failed sensor.
What is the difference between P2562 and P2563?
P2562 is a circuit fault: the signal is missing or electrically impossible, so wiring, plugs and the sensor come first. P2563 means the signal is present but disagrees with the commanded position, which more often points to vanes or linkage sticking with soot. Volkswagen's own text for P2563 adds "Implausible Signal", which is why the two are often confused.
Can I drive with P2562?
Usually gently and only to a workshop. Power is normally capped because the computer cannot confirm the turbo position. Stop and arrange a tow if the engine surges and then cuts power.
Does P2562 mean I need a new turbo?
Usually not. Most repairs are a plug, a wire, the position sensor or the electronic actuator. A complete turbo is needed only when the actuator or sensor is not sold separately for your engine.
How much does it cost to fix P2562?
Cleaning and reseating a plug is often free to 50 euros, and a wiring or connector repair 70 to 220 euros. A new electronic actuator or position sensor costs 140 to 500 euros fitted. Where only a complete turbo is sold, expect 700 to 2,300 euros including labour.
