The 1.4 TSI is two different engines under one badge. The older EA111 (roughly 2006 to 2014, chain-driven, single turbo or turbo plus supercharger) is known for timing chains that stretch and jump, weak pistons on the twincharger versions and sticking turbo wastegates. The newer EA211 (from 2012, belt-driven, single turbo) was a clean-sheet redesign and has a far better record, with the water pump as its best-known weak point. Find out which one the car has before anything else: that decides most of the risk.

Known problems

EA111: timing chain stretch and tensioner failure

What happens

On the chain-driven EA111 the chain tensioner could lose its grip and the chain stretched early. A stretched chain throws the valve timing out and can skip a tooth or break, which lets the valves hit the pistons and wrecks the engine. The design was revised around 2010, and later engines tend to fail far later, but a chain that has never been replaced is still a risk on a high-mileage car. VW's goodwill contribution for this fault, reported by AUTO BILD in 2012, was no longer being honoured by 2018, so today the owner pays.

Symptoms

  • Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start
  • Check-engine light with a camshaft/crankshaft correlation or cam timing code
  • Rough running or loss of power
  • Engine will not start after the chain has jumped

When

Early engines (2006-2010) sometimes within the first 20,000-30,000 km; revised engines typically much later, at high mileage

Fitted cost

from €700 to €1,400

The fix

Replace the chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets with the latest kit, and check the intake cam adjuster. If the chain has already jumped, the head or the whole engine may need rebuilding (roughly €2,000-6,000+).

EA111: damaged pistons and rings, high oil consumption

What happens

Pistons on the EA111, above all on the twincharger versions but also on the 122-125 PS turbo engines, can crack or lose their ring lands under heat and knock. The first sign is often rising oil consumption, followed by misfires and low compression on one cylinder. Overheating from a failed water pump can cause the same damage.

Symptoms

  • Oil level dropping between services
  • Blue smoke, especially after idling
  • Misfire on one cylinder, flashing check-engine light
  • Low compression on one cylinder when tested

When

Mostly early twincharger engines (2006-2010), less often on later ones; can show up at any mileage

Fitted cost

from €2,000 to €6,000

The fix

A compression or leak-down test confirms it; the fix is new pistons and rings, or an exchange engine.

EA111 twincharger: supercharger clutch and water pump noise

What happens

On the twincharger versions (for example BMY, BLG, CAVD) the supercharger is switched in by an electromagnetic clutch built into the water pump pulley. The clutch can fail or chatter, which either takes away low-rev boost or produces a whistle or squeal around 2,500-3,000 rpm. The pump and clutch are replaced as one unit.

Symptoms

  • Whistle or squeal when accelerating around 2,500-3,000 rpm
  • Weak pulling power at low revs
  • Check-engine light for low boost

When

Any mileage on twincharger engines, most often on cars built before about 2010

Fitted cost

from €150 to €400

The fix

Replace the water pump with the integrated supercharger clutch, and refill and bleed the coolant.

EA111 single turbo: sticking wastegate

What happens

On the single-turbo EA111 (122-125 PS, for example CAXA and CAXC) the wastegate flap shaft in the turbo housing can wear and jam. A wastegate stuck open means low boost and a flat engine; stuck closed, it can overboost and put the engine into limp mode. Worn linkage also rattles at idle.

Symptoms

  • Loss of power, engine feels flat
  • Limp mode with a boost-pressure code
  • Metallic rattle from the turbo at idle or low load

When

Typically around 100,000 km, sometimes earlier

Fitted cost

from €150 to €500

The fix

Free up or replace the wastegate actuator and linkage; if the shaft bore itself is worn, the turbo is replaced (roughly €700-2,500).

Both generations: carbon build-up on the intake valves

What happens

Both 1.4 TSI generations inject fuel straight into the cylinder, so no fuel washes over the intake valves. Oil mist from the crankcase ventilation bakes onto them as hard carbon, which disturbs the airflow and can cause misfires. Fuel additives do not reach these deposits.

Symptoms

  • Rough idle, especially from cold
  • Misfires and a check-engine light
  • Gradual loss of power and higher fuel use

When

High mileage, earlier on cars used for short trips

Fitted cost

from €140 to €300

The fix

Clean the intake ports and valves (walnut blasting or a similar induction clean) and check the crankcase ventilation.

EA211: water pump weakness and coolant loss

What happens

The EA211 is a far more robust design, and its best-known weak point is the water pump. A tired pump shows up as a temperature that creeps up under heavy load, and a leaking pump or its housing slowly loses coolant. Left alone, overheating can damage the engine.

Symptoms

  • Temperature gauge rising under heavy load or towing
  • Coolant level dropping with no obvious puddle
  • Sweet coolant smell in the engine bay

When

Any age; check the history at every purchase

Fitted cost

from €200 to €450

The fix

Replace the water pump (on these engines often a unit with the thermostat housing), refill and bleed the system.

What an OBD2 reader can and cannot show

A generic OBD2 reader can show

  • Stored and pending engine codes such as P0016 and P0011 (cam and crank timing), P0299 and P0234 (boost), and the P0300-P0304 misfire codes
  • The freeze-frame snapshot saved with a code: rpm, load, coolant temperature and speed at the moment it set
  • Live coolant temperature, to see whether the engine overheats under load or warms up too slowly
  • Live intake manifold pressure (MAP), which shows whether the engine is building pressure when you accelerate
  • Short- and long-term fuel trims, which point to air leaks or mixture problems
  • Readiness monitors: several incomplete monitors on a car for sale suggest the codes were cleared recently

Needs manufacturer-level software

  • How far the timing chain has stretched: the camshaft deviation value workshops use is read with VAG software (VCDS, OBDeleven), not generic OBD2
  • Whether the supercharger clutch is engaging, or the wastegate position and specified boost
  • Per-cylinder misfire counters and compression, which need manufacturer software and a compression tester
  • Oil consumption, piston condition or carbon on the intake valves
  • Water pump leaks or timing belt condition, which need a visual inspection
  • Which engine code the car has: check the service book, the data sticker or the engine itself

Buying checklist

  1. Identify the generation first: EA111 codes include CAXA, CAXC, BMY, BLG, CAVD, CAVA and CAVE; EA211 codes include CMBA, CZCA, CHPA, CPTA, CZDA and CZEA. A Golf VI or Octavia II is EA111, a Golf VII or Octavia III is EA211.
  2. On an EA111, start the engine fully cold (bonnet cold, ideally parked overnight) and listen for a rattle in the first seconds.
  3. Ask for an invoice showing a chain kit replacement on an EA111, with date and mileage; a high-mileage car with the original chain should be priced for one.
  4. Check the dipstick and ask how often oil is topped up; blue smoke or a low level on an EA111 points to piston or ring trouble.
  5. Look for oil changes at 10,000-15,000 km rather than long-life intervals, which are hard on the chain tensioner and cam adjuster.
  6. Scan for stored and pending codes and check the readiness monitors before the test drive.
  7. On the test drive, pull from low revs in a higher gear: the engine should build power smoothly with no whistle around 2,500-3,000 rpm and no sudden loss of power.
  8. On an EA211, check when the timing belt was last changed (by age as well as mileage), and look for coolant loss or traces around the water pump.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 1.4 TSI a good engine?

It depends on the generation. The belt-driven EA211 from 2012 has a good record, with the water pump as its main known weak point. The chain-driven EA111 from about 2006 to 2014 has well-documented chain, piston and wastegate problems, so it is only a sensible buy with proof of the key repairs.

Does the 1.4 TSI have a timing chain or a timing belt?

The older EA111 1.4 TSI uses a timing chain. The EA211 1.4 TSI, introduced from 2012 in cars such as the Golf VII and Octavia III, uses a toothed timing belt. The engine code tells you which one you have.

Which 1.4 TSI years have the timing chain problem?

The chain and tensioner problem belongs to the EA111, built from about 2006 to 2014. Early engines up to around 2010 were the worst affected; the parts were revised after that, but a later EA111 with an original chain can still stretch at high mileage. The EA211 has a belt and is not affected.

How do I know if the timing chain is stretched?

The classic sign is a rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. A stretched chain can also set cam and crank timing codes such as P0016 or P0011. A workshop confirms it by reading the camshaft deviation with VAG software or by inspecting the chain.

How much does a 1.4 TSI timing chain replacement cost?

At an independent workshop, a chain kit with tensioner and guides on the 1.4 TSI typically costs about €700-1,400 fitted. If the chain has already jumped and damaged the valves or pistons, the bill rises to roughly €2,000-6,000 or more.

How can I tell an EA111 from an EA211 1.4 TSI?

Check the three- or four-letter engine code in the service book, on the vehicle data sticker or on the engine. Codes such as CAXA, CAXC, BMY, BLG and CAVD are EA111; CMBA, CZCA, CHPA, CPTA, CZDA and CZEA are EA211. As a rough guide, a model generation launched from 2012 on the MQB platform has the EA211.
