P0196 means the engine oil temperature signal is electrically healthy but the value does not make sense. The ECU compares oil temperature against coolant and intake air temperature, and against how quickly the oil should warm up, then sets the code when the number is implausible: stuck on one value, drifting, or still cold after a long drive. This is what separates P0196 from P0195, which is the plain circuit fault for the same sensor. The usual causes are a failing oil temperature sensor, a corroded connector low down on the engine, or oil that is low or badly degraded. P0195 and P0196 very often appear together, and when they do they almost always share one root cause, so you are usually buying one sensor rather than two repairs. Expect roughly 70 EUR for a cheap standalone sender fitted at a shop, rising to about 590 EUR on a car with a combined oil level and condition sensor in the sump, because that repair also forces an oil and filter change.
P0196 is a electrical-related diagnostic trouble code classified as moderate severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P0196 and illuminates the check engine light.
