Is it safe to drive with P0196?

Generally yes, for short-term driving. Usually safe to drive. The code itself does not mean the engine is in danger, it means the oil temperature reading cannot be trusted. Two things are worth knowing while you wait for the repair. On most modern cars the oil temperature comes from the same sensor that measures oil level, so a failed sensor can also cost you the low oil level warning, and you should check the dipstick by hand every few weeks. And because the ECU no longer has a believable oil temperature, a genuine oil overheating event during towing or hard driving would not be flagged.

How do you diagnose P0196?

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0196:

  1. Leave the car standing overnight, then read live data before you start it. Oil temperature, coolant temperature and intake air temperature should all sit within a few degrees of each other on a properly cold engine. A large gap here is the single clearest sign that the oil sensor is the liar, and it costs nothing to check
  2. Start the engine and watch the oil temperature climb. On a healthy engine it lags coolant by a few minutes and then settles around 90 to 110 C. P0196 is a value that is electrically plausible but wrong, so what you are looking for is a reading frozen on one number, drifting slowly away from where it should be, or still cold after 20 minutes of driving while coolant sits at 90 C. A value pinned hard at an extreme such as -40 C or above 140 C is the out of range fault instead, and that sets P0195, P0197 or P0198
  3. Check the oil level and condition on the dipstick. Low or heavily degraded oil can produce an implausible reading on its own, so rule this out before buying parts
  4. Inspect the sensor connector and the harness running down to it. Look for green corrosion, a loose or spread pin, chafed insulation, or oil that has crept down the wiring from a leak higher up on the engine
  5. Check whether P0195 is stored alongside P0196. P0195 is the circuit version of the same fault, and both together nearly always mean one bad sensor or one bad connection, not two separate problems
  6. Before condemning the sensor, confirm the engine itself warms up normally by checking that coolant temperature reaches 85 to 95 C. If it does not, a thermostat stuck open is leaving the whole engine cold and the oil reading is correct rather than faulty

Diagnose them as one fault: check the connector, check the oil, then compare oil against coolant temperature on a cold engine. In the large majority of cases one sensor or one repaired connector clears both codes, so budget for one repair, not two.

Is it safe to drive with a P0196 code?

Yes in normal use. The code reports a measurement problem, not a mechanical one, and the engine is not being damaged by the fault itself. Two cautions apply.
