P0221: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "B" Circuit Range/Performance
Quick Answer
Safe to drive (short-term)
P0221 means the signal from throttle position sensor "B" is electrically within its normal range but does not behave the way the engine computer expects: it does not match sensor "A", does not match the pedal, or changes in a way that does not make sense. On most drive-by-wire cars sensor "B" is the second position sensor inside the electronic throttle body, though on some makes the letter refers to a pedal sensor. Common causes are a worn sensor track, carbon or a sticking throttle plate, and an intermittent connector or wiring fault.

P0221 is a electrical-related diagnostic trouble code classified as moderate severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P0221 and illuminates the check engine light.
Where it is on the car
- Air filter box
- Mass airflow sensor (MAF)
- Throttle body and throttle position sensor
- Intake manifold and MAP sensor
- Engine (cylinder head)
What are the symptoms of P0221?
If your vehicle has triggered P0221, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:
- EPC light (on Volkswagen group cars) or check engine light on, often with a reduced power message
- Reduced power or limp mode, especially after the fault has repeated
- Hesitation, surging or a flat spot when pressing the accelerator
- Rough or hunting idle, sometimes stalling when coming to a stop
- Fault that comes and goes with temperature or bumps
What causes P0221?
Here are the most common causes of P0221:
Worn or contaminated sensor track inside the electronic throttle body
: high
Carbon on the throttle plate or a sticking plate, so the measured position lags or jumps
: medium
Intermittent connector fault: corrosion, oil or a loose pin at the throttle body
: medium
Chafed wire or high resistance in the sensor "B" signal, reference or ground
: medium
Accelerator pedal sensor fault, on makes where sensor "B" is in the pedal
: low
Engine computer fault (rare)
: low
Is it safe to drive with P0221?
Generally yes, for short-term driving. Driving is usually possible but often limited. The engine computer typically switches to a reduced-power mode when it stops trusting the throttle signals, and some cars hold a raised idle. Drive gently to a workshop, avoid motorway merging and overtaking, and do not ignore it, because the fault can get worse and leave you with almost no power.
How do you diagnose P0221?
Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0221:
- Read all stored codes and the freeze frame. P2135 alongside means the two throttle sensors also disagree, while P0222 or P0223 point to a sensor "B" circuit that is shorted or open. A generic OBD2 reader shows the codes, the freeze frame and, where the engine computer reports them, the standard throttle position and accelerator pedal position readings.
- With the ignition on and the engine off, watch both throttle position readings while a helper presses the pedal slowly. Sensor "B" should follow sensor "A" smoothly over the whole travel; a flat spot, jump or lag in "B" points to the sensor track or the connector.
- Remove the intake hose and look at the throttle plate. Heavy carbon or a plate that sticks can be cleaned with throttle body cleaner; do not force a drive-by-wire plate open by hand.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, oil and loose pins, and wiggle the harness while watching the readings.
- Back-probe the reference, ground and sensor "B" signal. If the supply is good but the signal is erratic, replace the throttle body, since the sensors are built into it on most cars.
- After cleaning or replacement, run the throttle adaptation. On some makes it is a key-on and idle procedure; on others it needs manufacturer-level software, which a generic OBD2 reader cannot run. Clear the code and road-test.
How much does P0221 cost to fix?
Repair costs for P0221 vary depending on the root cause and your vehicle. Here are typical estimates:
| Repair | Parts Cost | Labor Cost | Total Estimate | DIY Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clean throttle body (workshop) | €0–€10 | €30–€80 | €30–€90 | Easy |
| Clean and reseat throttle body connector | €0–€10 | €0–€40 | €0–€50 | Easy |
| Repair throttle body wiring or connector | €10–€40 | €60–€180 | €70–€220 | Moderate |
| Replace electronic throttle body | €120–€450 | €30–€150 | €150–€600 | Moderate |
| Throttle adaptation with diagnostic software (where required) | €0–€0 | €30–€80 | €30–€80 | Professional |

Common questions about P0221
- What does P0221 mean?
- P0221 means throttle position sensor "B" is sending a signal that is electrically in range but does not make sense to the engine computer. It may not match sensor "A", may not match the pedal, or may jump or lag. On most drive-by-wire cars sensor "B" is the second sensor inside the electronic throttle body.
- What is the difference between P0221, P0222 and P0223?
- All three concern throttle or pedal position sensor "B". P0222 means the signal voltage is too low, usually a short to ground or a lost 5 V reference, and P0223 means it is too high, usually an open circuit or a short to voltage. P0221 means the voltage is within limits but behaves implausibly, which more often points to a worn sensor, carbon or an intermittent connection.
- Can a dirty throttle body cause P0221?
- It can. Carbon on the throttle plate can make it stick or move unevenly, so the measured position no longer matches what the engine computer commands. Clean it and run the throttle adaptation; if the code returns, the sensor inside the throttle body is the more likely fault.
- Can I drive with P0221?
- Usually yes for a short distance, but many cars go into reduced power once the fault repeats, and response to the pedal can be unpredictable. Drive gently to a workshop and avoid situations where you need full power quickly.
- How much does it cost to fix P0221?
- A workshop throttle body clean costs 30 to 90 euros. Cleaning and reseating the connector costs nothing to 50 euros and a wiring repair 70 to 220 euros. A new electronic throttle body costs 150 to 600 euros fitted, plus 30 to 80 euros where the adaptation needs diagnostic software.
