P0443: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit
Quick Answer
Safe to drive (short-term)
P0443 means the engine computer found an electrical fault in the circuit of the EVAP purge valve, the solenoid that lets fuel vapour from the charcoal canister into the engine. The computer drives the valve and checks that the circuit responds as commanded. A failed valve coil, a blown fuse, a damaged wire or a loose connector can all set the code. It is similar to P0444, where the circuit is open, and differs from P0441, which is about the purge flow.

P0443 is a evap system-related diagnostic trouble code classified as low severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P0443 and illuminates the check engine light.
Where it is on the car
- Fuel filler cap
- Fuel tank pressure sensor
- Charcoal canister
- Vent valve (to fresh air)
- Purge valve
- Intake manifold and engine
What are the symptoms of P0443?
If your vehicle has triggered P0443, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:
- Check engine light on
- Usually no change in driving
- Rough idle or a hard start after refuelling, if the valve is stuck open
- Smell of fuel vapour near the engine bay or fuel filler (less common)
- Failing the emissions part of a periodic inspection
What causes P0443?
Here are the most common causes of P0443:
Purge valve solenoid failed internally (open or shorted coil)
: high
Connector loose, corroded or damaged at the purge valve
: high
Damaged or chafed wiring between the valve and the engine computer
: medium
Blown fuse or no supply voltage to the valve
: medium
Engine computer output driver fault (rare, check the wiring and valve first)
: low
Is it safe to drive with P0443?
Generally yes, for short-term driving. Safe to drive. P0443 means the engine computer found a fault in the electrical circuit of the EVAP purge valve, which lets fuel vapour from the charcoal canister into the engine. The car usually drives normally, though a valve stuck open can cause a rough start after refuelling. Have it checked soon, because it can fail an emissions test and the warning light stays on.
How do you diagnose P0443?
Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0443:
- Read all stored codes and the freeze frame. Other EVAP codes such as P0441, P0444 or P0446 stored alongside tell you whether the valve circuit or the vapour system is the problem. A generic OBD2 reader shows the codes and the freeze frame.
- Find the purge valve, usually on or near the intake manifold where the vapour line from the canister joins, and check the connector is fully seated and free of corrosion.
- Check the fuse that feeds the valve. A blown fuse means there is a short to find, not only a fuse to replace.
- With the ignition on and the connector unplugged, check for supply voltage at the connector. No voltage points to the fuse, a relay or the supply wiring. On some cars, the first-generation Octavia 1.6 among them, the feed comes through the fuel pump relay, so check the wiring diagram for when it is live.
- Measure the valve's coil resistance against the workshop specification. An open or very different reading condemns the valve.
- Check the control wire for a short to ground, a short to voltage or an open circuit back to the engine computer. Workshops also switch the valve on and off with a scan tool to watch it respond; that test needs manufacturer-level software, because a generic OBD2 reader cannot command the valve.
- If the wiring and valve are good, the engine computer's output driver is the last suspect. After the repair, clear the code and road-test.
How much does P0443 cost to fix?
Repair costs for P0443 vary depending on the root cause and your vehicle. Here are typical estimates:
| Repair | Parts Cost | Labor Cost | Total Estimate | DIY Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reconnect, clean and reseat the purge valve connector | €0–€10 | €0–€40 | €0–€50 | Easy |
| Replace purge valve | €25–€120 | €40–€150 | €65–€270 | Moderate |
| Repair purge valve wiring, power feed or connector pins | €10–€40 | €60–€180 | €70–€220 | Moderate |
| Find the short and replace a blown fuse | €1–€5 | €0–€60 | €1–€65 | Moderate |
Prices estimated as of March 2026. Costs vary by region, vehicle, and shop.

Common questions about P0443
- What does P0443 mean?
- P0443 means the engine computer found an electrical fault in the circuit of the EVAP purge valve. The computer switches the valve and checks the circuit responds. The code points at the valve, its fuse, wiring or connector.
- Can I drive with P0443?
- Yes. The engine usually runs normally and the fault does not harm it. The warning light stays on and the car can fail an emissions test, so have it fixed soon.
- What is the difference between P0443 and P0444?
- P0443 is a general circuit fault on the purge valve, while P0444 specifically means the circuit is open. The checks are the same: fuse, connector, wiring and valve coil.
- Is P0443 the purge valve or the wiring?
- Either. A failed valve coil, a loose connector, a blown fuse and a damaged wire all set the same code, so check the fuse, the connector and the coil resistance before replacing the valve.
- Can a loose fuel cap cause P0443?
- No. A loose fuel cap sets leak codes such as P0455 or P0442, not a circuit fault on the purge valve. P0443 is about the valve's electrical circuit.
- How much does it cost to fix P0443?
- Reseating or cleaning the connector costs nothing to 50 euros. A new purge valve costs 65 to 270 euros fitted, a wiring repair 70 to 220 euros, and a fuse a few euros plus any fault-finding time.
