P0443 on Skoda: Causes, Symptoms and Fix Cost

Quick Answer

Safe to drive (short-term)

P0443 on a Skoda means the engine computer found an electrical fault in the circuit of the EVAP purge valve, the solenoid that lets fuel vapour from the charcoal canister into the engine. The computer drives the valve and checks that the circuit responds as commanded. A failed valve coil, a blown fuse, a damaged wire or a loose connector can all set the code. It is similar to P0444, where the circuit is open, and differs from P0441, which is about the purge flow. VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT apps often show this code as P044300; the last two digits are a failure-type byte.

What does P0443 mean on a Skoda?

The Quick Answer above is the generic definition. What follows is the model-specific detail for the Skoda models that log P0443.

Skoda Octavia (first generation) 1.6 petrol, 55 kW (AEE)

1996-2000

Skoda's workshop manual for the first-generation Octavia 1.6 (55 kW) feeds the purge valve, called N80, through the fuel pump relay, so a missing supply points to that relay or its fuses. Unplugged, the valve should measure 22 to 30 ohms between its contacts. The manual then switches the valve with the factory tester's actuator test and checks its control wire to the engine computer for an open circuit or a short.

What causes P0443 on a Skoda?

Beyond the generic causes listed on the main P0443 page, these are the patterns noted for Skoda models:

  • No supply from the fuel pump relay or a fuse

  • N80 valve coil outside 22 to 30 ohms

How to diagnose P0443 on a Skoda with OBD2

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P0443:

  1. Read all stored codes and the freeze frame. Other EVAP codes such as P0441, P0444 or P0446 stored alongside tell you whether the valve circuit or the vapour system is the problem. A generic OBD2 reader shows the codes and the freeze frame.
  2. Find the purge valve, usually on or near the intake manifold where the vapour line from the canister joins, and check the connector is fully seated and free of corrosion.
  3. Check the fuse that feeds the valve. A blown fuse means there is a short to find, not only a fuse to replace.
  4. With the ignition on and the connector unplugged, check for supply voltage at the connector. No voltage points to the fuse, a relay or the supply wiring. On some cars, the first-generation Octavia 1.6 among them, the feed comes through the fuel pump relay, so check the wiring diagram for when it is live.
  5. Measure the valve's coil resistance against the workshop specification. An open or very different reading condemns the valve.
  6. Check the control wire for a short to ground, a short to voltage or an open circuit back to the engine computer. Workshops also switch the valve on and off with a scan tool to watch it respond; that test needs manufacturer-level software, because a generic OBD2 reader cannot command the valve.
  7. If the wiring and valve are good, the engine computer's output driver is the last suspect. After the repair, clear the code and road-test.
