Replacing an idle air control valve (IAC) in Europe costs between EUR 60 and EUR 280 fitted, but this is a job that mostly applies to older vehicles. The IAC valve was used on engines with mechanical throttle bodies (mostly pre-2008) to control idle speed by metering a small amount of air around a closed throttle plate. Modern electronic throttle bodies do not need a separate IAC. Symptoms include codes P0505 to P0508 (idle control system), erratic idle, stalling at junctions and slow throttle response. Cleaning is the first step - 60 to 70 percent of suspected IAC failures resolve with a 30-minute clean and an idle relearn.
Typical EU price€60 - €280Range covers parts and labour for the valve itself on engines pre-2008 with a mechanical throttle body. Cleaning-only service runs EUR 40 to EUR 80 - the sensible first step. Modern vehicles (post-2008 with electronic throttle bodies) do not use an IAC and the symptoms point to the throttle body itself.
Parts cost
Aftermarket (EU type-approved): €40 - €180. Common brands: Bosch, Pierburg, Hella, Hitachi, Standard, VDO.
OEM: €80 - €220.
Bosch and Pierburg supply most OEM IAC valves on European vehicles from the late 1990s to mid-2000s. Hitachi supplies many Japanese-market engines. The IAC is a small motorised or solenoid-controlled valve with 4 or 6 pins. Always source by exact part number - similar-looking valves can have different stepper motor counts or solenoid resistance values.
Labor cost
Range: €20 - €200. Typical labor time: 0.3 - 1.5 hours.
Independent workshop rate: €60-90/hr. Dealer rate: €120-180/hr.
IAC valves on a four-cylinder transverse engine are typically 20 to 40 minutes - they bolt to the side of the throttle body with 2 or 3 screws. Some V6 designs place the IAC at the back of the throttle body, requiring intake removal: 1 to 1.5 hours. Always perform an idle relearn after fitment - most older ECUs do this automatically with a few drive cycles, but a manual reset via scan tool speeds it up.
Can you DIY this repair?
Difficulty: easy. One of the easier DIY jobs for an older vehicle. The IAC bolts to the side of the throttle body with 2 or 3 screws. Unplug the connector, unbolt the valve, swap with the new one and a new gasket or O-ring. Save EUR 30 to EUR 100 versus a workshop. Clean as the first step - spray throttle-body cleaner into the valve passages while working the plunger manually. Most IAC valves clean up successfully and avoid replacement entirely.
Warning signs you need this repair
- Erratic idle that hunts up and down between 600 and 1,500 RPM, especially after a cold start
- Engine stalls at idle, typically when coming to a stop after highway driving
- Check engine light with codes P0505, P0506, P0507 or P0508 (idle control system or circuit)
- Slow or hesitant throttle response from idle
- Engine struggles to maintain idle with auxiliary loads on (air conditioning, headlights, rear demister)
- Difficulty starting on cold mornings - engine starts then immediately stalls
- Fuel consumption climbing 5 to 10 percent above normal due to incorrect idle adjustment
When to replace
Replace the IAC when cleaning has not restored normal idle and codes P0505 to P0508 return. On engines past 200,000 km with original IAC valves, replacement is preventive maintenance during a major service. On vehicles with electronic throttle bodies (most post-2008 designs), there is no IAC to replace - idle symptoms on these vehicles point to the throttle body itself, the mass airflow sensor, or vacuum leaks.
When you can keep driving
A failing IAC on an older vehicle causes erratic idle and the occasional stall but no immediate mechanical risk. You can drive for weeks or months in this state. Stalling at junctions is annoying and slightly hazardous, particularly in heavy traffic. Stored codes will fail TÜV, ITV, TA, SKP and MOT inspection. Address before the next scheduled inspection.
Diagnosis before replacing
- Read codes with a generic OBD2 scanner (Skanyx or any ELM327 adapter). P0506 (idle below target), P0507 (idle above target), P0508 (idle control circuit) plus freeze frame data. Generic OBD2 reads throttle position live (Mode 01 PID 11) and engine RPM (PID 0C) - watch idle RPM stability over a 2-minute idle test
- Locate the IAC and inspect it visually. Remove the valve (2 or 3 screws), check for carbon and oily residue inside the passages and on the plunger. Most IAC failures are carbon buildup, not electronic failure - cleaning resolves them
- Clean the IAC. Spray throttle-body cleaner into the valve passages while working the plunger by hand (gently). Wipe with a lint-free cloth. Reinstall with a new gasket or O-ring. This is the first-line response on any IAC symptom
- Check the IAC stepper or solenoid with a multimeter. Most IAC valves test in the 7 to 25 ohm range across each coil pair. Open circuit or shorted readings confirm electronic failure - cleaning will not help
- Verify the throttle plate is not stuck open. A throttle plate that does not return fully to its idle stop position lets too much air in, mimicking IAC failure and setting the same idle codes. Inspect with the engine off and the air intake hose removed
- Rule out vacuum leaks first. A small vacuum leak past the throttle body causes the same idle symptoms as a tired IAC. The ECU compensates by closing the IAC further, eventually exceeding the idle adaptation range. Smoke test the intake before condemning the IAC
BMW 3 Series (M54 pre-2008)
1999-2007
BMW M54 (3.0 straight-six, 1998 to 2006) and M52TU use an IAC valve that bolts to the side of the throttle body - easy access. Bosch supplies the OEM unit at EUR 120 to EUR 180. Cleaning resolves most cases on M54 - the engine breathes through the IAC at idle and accumulates carbon at 100,000 km plus. N52 (2005 onwards) uses electronic throttle and has no IAC. Always rule out vacuum leaks from the cracked plastic intake boot on M54 - a common confusing factor.

Volkswagen Golf Mk4 (pre-2005)
1997-2005
Golf Mk4 (1997 to 2005) with 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8T engines uses a Bosch IAC valve on the side of the throttle body. Cleaning typically resolves idle issues at 150,000 km plus. Golf Mk5 and later moved to electronic throttle and no IAC exists on those generations. The 1.9 TDI diesel of this era does not use an IAC. Aftermarket Pierburg and Bosch units at EUR 50 to EUR 120.
Parts: €55 - €150
Labor: €40 - €140
Audi A4 B6 (pre-2005)
2001-2005
Audi A4 B6 (2001 to 2005) with 1.8T and 2.0 petrol uses a Bosch IAC valve. B7 onwards (2005) moved to electronic throttle and no IAC exists. The 1.8T engine in particular suffers from IAC carbon buildup - cleaning is highly effective. Bosch and Pierburg parts via autodoc.de, kfzteile24.de and oscaro.es.
Parts: €70 - €180
Labor: €50 - €160
Ford Focus Mk1 and Mk2 (pre-2008)
1998-2008
Ford Focus Mk1 (1998 to 2005) and Mk2 (2005 to 2008) with Zetec, Duratec and pre-EcoBoost engines use a stepper-motor IAC on the side of the throttle body. The valve is durable and rarely fails - most idle complaints are carbon buildup or a cracked vacuum hose. Cleaning resolves most cases. Mk3 Focus (2008 onwards) moved to electronic throttle and has no IAC.
Parts: €40 - €120
Labor: €30 - €120
Toyota Camry XV30 (pre-2007)
2001-2006
Toyota Camry XV30 (2001 to 2006) with the 1MZ-FE V6 and 2AZ-FE four-cylinder uses an IAC. Failures are rare and usually past 200,000 km. Cleaning is highly effective. The 2007 Camry redesign (XV40) moved to electronic throttle and has no IAC. Denso supplies most Toyota IAC valves. Aftermarket Standard and Bosch alternatives available.

Labor: €40 - €130
IAC replaced when cleaning would have fixed it
60 to 70 percent of suspected IAC failures on engines with 100,000 km plus mileage are carbon buildup, not electronic failure. A 30-minute clean costs EUR 40 to EUR 80 and resolves most cases. Always demand cleaning as the first step on any IAC quote. New-part replacement is the second step, not the first.
Vacuum leak misdiagnosed as IAC failure
Vacuum leaks downstream of the throttle plate cause identical idle symptoms to a tired IAC. The ECU sees high airflow at idle and reduces IAC opening to compensate, eventually triggering P0506 or P0507. Replacing the IAC leaves the vacuum leak active - codes return within weeks. Smoke-test the intake first.
Cheap unbranded IAC valve fitted
Cheap unbranded IAC valves from internet marketplaces account for most repeat failures in this category. The internal stepper or solenoid resistance often differs from OE spec, returning the same code within months. Always specify Bosch, Pierburg or Hella on the workshop invoice.
IAC blamed on a modern vehicle with electronic throttle body
Most cars from 2008 onwards do not have a separate IAC valve - the electronic throttle body controls idle directly by holding the throttle plate slightly open. If someone quotes you an IAC replacement on a modern direct-injection petrol car, that part does not exist on your engine. The actual issue is the throttle body, mass airflow sensor, or a vacuum leak.
Germany
TÜV will fail OBD readiness on stored P0505 to P0508. Aftermarket and OEM IAC valves via ATU, Autodoc.de and kfzteile24.de at EUR 40 to EUR 180. German labour at EUR 75 to EUR 90 per hour cleans an IAC for EUR 70 to EUR 110 or replaces it for EUR 130 to EUR 220 total.
Poland
Older VW, BMW and Ford from the early 2000s remain a large slice of the Polish used market - IAC failures are still a current repair category. Local labour at EUR 25 to EUR 45 per hour and parts via iParts.pl, allegro.pl and intercars.pl puts an IAC clean-or-replace at EUR 50 to EUR 130 fitted. Przegląd techniczny fails stored idle codes.
Lithuania
Pre-2008 vehicles imported from Germany at 200,000 km plus often arrive with intermittent idle issues. Cleaning the IAC is a EUR 30 to EUR 50 first step at any Vilnius or Kaunas independent. Local labour at EUR 25 to EUR 40 per hour fits a new IAC for EUR 60 to EUR 120 if cleaning does not resolve.
Spain
Older Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf Mk4 and BMW E46 are common Spanish-market cars from the early 2000s. ITV inspection fails stored idle codes. Spanish independents at EUR 55 to EUR 75 per hour clean or replace an IAC for EUR 60 to EUR 180 total. Aftermarket parts via oscaro.es and recambioscoches.es.
How much does an idle air control valve replacement cost in Europe?
Between EUR 60 and EUR 280 fitted on engines pre-2008 that have an IAC. A cleaning-only service is EUR 40 to EUR 80 and resolves most cases. Modern vehicles (post-2008 with electronic throttle bodies) do not use an IAC - idle symptoms on these point to the throttle body, MAF sensor or vacuum leak instead.
Does my car have an idle air control valve?
Most petrol cars built before 2008 do. Most cars built after 2008 do not - they use electronic throttle bodies that control idle directly. Look at your throttle body: if there is a small separate motor or solenoid bolted to its side (typically with a 4 or 6 pin connector), that is the IAC. If the throttle body is a single sealed unit with one electrical connector, your car has electronic throttle and no IAC.
Can I clean an IAC valve instead of replacing it?
Yes, and you should try cleaning first. 60 to 70 percent of suspected IAC failures on engines past 100,000 km are carbon buildup, not electronic failure. Remove the valve (2 to 3 screws), spray throttle-body cleaner into the passages while gently working the plunger by hand, wipe with a lint-free cloth, refit with a new gasket. Total job: 30 minutes plus an idle relearn drive cycle. Saves EUR 80 to EUR 200 versus replacement.
Why does my engine stall at idle?
Common causes on engines with an IAC. First, carbon buildup in the IAC preventing the valve from holding the correct idle airflow. Second, a vacuum leak past the throttle body. Third, a contaminated mass airflow sensor reporting incorrect airflow. Fourth, a failing IAC stepper motor or solenoid. Start with IAC cleaning and a smoke test for vacuum leaks - those two steps resolve 80 percent of stall complaints.
Do I need to reset anything after replacing the IAC?
Most older ECUs perform an automatic idle relearn over the first few drive cycles after a battery disconnect or major intake work. A scan-tool initiated idle relearn speeds this up to 5 to 10 minutes. On VAG cars of this era, VAG-COM or VCDS can perform the relearn directly. On BMW E46, the M54 has an idle adaptation procedure in INPA. Generic OBD2 cannot perform these procedures.
How long does an IAC valve last?
200,000 km plus on most designs. Bosch and Denso IAC valves regularly exceed 250,000 km if the intake system is sealed and the engine is well-maintained. Carbon buildup symptoms (not actual failure) cluster at 100,000 km plus and respond to cleaning. Electronic failure of the stepper or solenoid is rare and usually past 200,000 km.
Why does my idle feel different after replacing the IAC?
Idle relearn has not completed yet. After IAC replacement (or any intake work that affects idle), the ECU needs to learn the new idle adaptation values - this can take 5 to 50 drive cycles depending on the engine. During this period, idle may surge slightly, hunt around the target RPM, or feel slightly different. The engine settles within a few days of normal driving. A scan-tool reset speeds this up if your tool supports it.
