The short answer

An ELM327 adapter is a small plug for the OBD2 port that lets an app on your phone read fault codes and live data from the engine computer. It fits EU petrol cars from 2001, EU diesels from 2004 and US cars from 1996, and costs roughly 8 to 60 euros. An iPhone needs a Bluetooth LE or Wi-Fi model, so check that before you buy.

Key Takeaways(5)
  • Stored and pending fault codes, and clear them after a repair.
  • The freeze-frame snapshot saved with a code.
  • Live values such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel trims and oxygen sensor readings. Live data explained covers what the numbers mean.
  • Readiness monitors, which show whether the emissions self-tests have finished.
  • The VIN, which apps use to identify the car.

A 12-euro adapter arrives in the post. The listing says "ELM327 v2.1 Bluetooth, works with all cars", your car has a check-engine light you want explained, and when you plug it in nothing shows up in the app. Before you send it back, it helps to know what the thing is, which type your phone can talk to, and what it can and cannot read.

What is an ELM327 adapter and what can it read?

ELM327 is the name of a chip from Elm Electronics. It turns the car's diagnostic signals into simple text commands that an app can send and receive. The chip supports the standard OBD2 protocols, including CAN, which almost every modern car uses (Wikipedia: ELM327). Most adapters sold today are copies of the design, and "ELM327" has become the word for any cheap OBD2 dongle.

With a generic adapter and a generic app you can read the engine and emissions side of the car:

  • Stored and pending fault codes, and clear them after a repair.
  • The freeze-frame snapshot saved with a code.
  • Live values such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel trims and oxygen sensor readings. Live data explained covers what the numbers mean.
  • Readiness monitors, which show whether the emissions self-tests have finished.
  • The VIN, which apps use to identify the car.

What it will not do is just as important. A plain generic app does not code your car, run actuator tests such as a forced DPF regeneration, or read battery health on an electric car. Those jobs need brand-specific software. If you want to know where that line sits, what OBD2 is and is not is the short version.

Will an ELM327 adapter work on your car?

It works on any car that follows the OBD2 standard. In practice that means:

  • EU petrol cars: all cars sold from 1 January 2001.
  • EU diesel cars: all cars sold from 1 January 2004.
  • US cars: gasoline cars from model year 1996, light-duty diesels a year later.

The EU dates are for passenger cars; vans and light commercial vehicles followed later (Wikipedia: On-board diagnostics). The US date comes from the EPA's own guidance (US EPA). A 1999 diesel or a 2000 petrol car from Europe may have a port and still not talk the standard language.

The port itself sits under the dashboard on the driver's side on most cars. If you cannot find it, where the OBD2 port is shows the usual spots. Electric cars have the same port, but a generic adapter gets almost nothing useful from them.

Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi or USB: which ELM327 type fits your phone?

This is the part that decides whether the adapter works at all. The chip is the same; the way it talks to your phone is not.

TypeWorks on iPhoneWorks on AndroidTypical priceNotes
Bluetooth Classic (3.0)NoYes8 to 25 eurosMost cheap clones. Must be paired in the phone's Bluetooth settings first.
Bluetooth LE (4.0 or "BLE")YesYes30 to 60 eurosThe safe pick if the household has an iPhone.
Wi-FiYesYes10 to 25 eurosMakes its own network, so the phone joins it while you scan.
USB cableNoNo10 to 25 eurosFor laptop software (Windows, some on Mac) only.
An iPhone cannot connect to a Classic Bluetooth adapter. OBD Auto Doctor says so directly, and names the OBDLink MX+, vLinker FS and vLinker MS as the Apple-verified exceptions (OBD Auto Doctor). Some adapters carry both radios. On those, only the BLE side counts on an iPhone.

Support also depends on the app, so check the app's own adapter list before you spend money.

For model picks, the pages on generic ELM327 adapters, Veepeak, Vgate, vLinker, OBDLink and BAFX list which exact models work on iPhone and Android.

The adapter only gets the data out of the car; the app decides whether you can make sense of it. Skanyx reads the codes off any Bluetooth ELM327 your phone can see (Classic Bluetooth or Bluetooth LE on Android, Bluetooth LE or the OBDLink MX+ on iPhone; it does not use Wi-Fi adapters), tells you in plain language what the fault means for your car, puts a green-to-red severity on it, and gives a rough repair cost in your currency, with a demo mode so you can look around before you buy anything. Is a cheap ELM327 clone good enough, and does v1.5 vs v2.1 matter?

For a few scans a year, a clone is usually fine. For weekly use, a dropped connection halfway through a scan gets old fast, and that is where the 30 to 60 euro branded adapters earn their price.

The version number on the listing is mostly noise:

  • Elm Electronics never made a "v1.5". A unit that reports v1.5 is a copy (Wikipedia: ELM327).
  • Copies can also report the current version number falsely, so a cheap "v2.1" proves nothing either. Car Scanner's own App Store listing warns that cheap eBay and Amazon clones marked v2.1 have lots of bugs (App Store).
  • A genuine version 2.1 did exist, but you cannot tell a real one from a relabelled copy by reading the listing.

So skip the version hunt. Buy a known brand, read recent reviews, and pick a seller with easy returns. If one adapter misbehaves on your car, a second adapter from another brand tells you quickly whether the first was the problem. FORScan's maker goes further and says it no longer recommends any "ELM327" at all, and points to OBDLink units instead (FORScan).

Which app should you use for which job?

Almost every OBD2 app talks to a standard ELM327 adapter, so the real choice is the job you want done. The full ranking lives in the best OBD2 apps comparison; this is the short map.

How do you connect an ELM327 adapter step by step?

  1. Plug the adapter into the OBD2 port and turn the ignition on. The engine can be off or running.
  2. On Android with a Bluetooth adapter, pair it first in the phone's Bluetooth settings. The PIN is in the adapter's manual or listing.
  3. On iPhone, do not pair it in settings. BLE adapters are chosen inside the app, and the Car Scanner guide says so in as many words (Car Scanner). With a Wi-Fi adapter, join its network in the phone's Wi-Fi settings instead.
  4. Open your app and choose the matching connection type (Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE or Wi-Fi), then select the adapter. Skanyx does the adapter search for you and reconnects on later trips.
  5. Wait for the app to detect the car's protocol, then read the codes. Plugging in and reading a code usually takes a minute or two.

Write down every code before you clear anything. Clearing a code erases the freeze-frame snapshot that a mechanic would want to see.

Why won't my ELM327 adapter connect?

Work through these in order:

  • Ignition is off. The adapter gets power from the port, but the car's computer has to be awake to answer.
  • Wrong radio for the phone. An iPhone will never see a Classic Bluetooth adapter. If it does not appear in the app's list, check the listing for "BLE" or "Bluetooth 4.0".
  • Not paired on Android. Classic adapters must be paired in the system settings before the app can use them.
  • Wrong connection type in the app. An app set to Wi-Fi will not find a Bluetooth adapter, and the other way round.
  • Wi-Fi network not joined. With a Wi-Fi adapter the phone has to be on the adapter's own network while you scan.
  • A weak clone. If the adapter pairs but the app cannot detect a protocol, or the link drops every few minutes, try a second adapter from a known brand before you suspect the car.
  • The wrong port. Some cars hide the port behind a panel. Make sure the adapter is pushed all the way in.

What does an ELM327 adapter not do?

With a generic app it does not unlock hidden features, reset service intervals on every brand, or run tests that move parts of the car, and no generic app reads battery health on an electric or hybrid car. Coding needs brand-specific software such as BimmerCode, FORScan, OBDeleven or VCDS, some of which run on a good ELM327-compatible adapter; EV battery data needs a brand-specific app such as LeafSpy. For the everyday question of "what does this warning light mean and can I keep driving", a generic adapter and a good app are enough.

An adapter at 15 euros and a free app is a fair first setup. Plug it in, read the code before you pay anyone, and upgrade the adapter only if the connection keeps dropping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ELM327 adapter used for?
It plugs into the OBD2 port under the dashboard and passes data between the car's engine computer and an app on your phone or laptop. With it you can read and clear fault codes, see live values such as engine speed and coolant temperature, and read the VIN. On its own, with a generic app, it does not code the car; some brand apps such as BimmerCode or FORScan do code through suitable ELM327-compatible adapters.
Does an ELM327 adapter work on iPhone?
Only some do. An iPhone cannot connect to a Classic Bluetooth adapter, which is what most cheap clones use, so look for Bluetooth LE (also written Bluetooth 4.0 or BLE) or Wi-Fi in the listing. The OBDLink MX+, vLinker FS and vLinker MS are Apple-verified exceptions, and not every app supports all three.
Is ELM327 v1.5 or v2.1 better?
Neither number tells you much on a cheap adapter. Elm Electronics never made a v1.5, so a unit that reports it is a clone, and clones can also report a newer version than they really run. Judge an adapter by its brand, its reviews and the seller's return policy instead.
Will an ELM327 adapter work on any car?
It works on cars that follow the OBD2 standard: petrol cars sold in the EU from 2001, diesel cars from 2004, and petrol cars sold in the US from 1996. Older cars, and electric cars, give little or nothing useful on a generic adapter.
Can I leave an ELM327 adapter plugged in?
Many people do, but quality varies a lot between units, so check the maker's guidance for your model before you rely on it. Unplugging it when you park for weeks is the cautious choice, and it costs you nothing.
Which app is best for an ELM327 adapter?
There is no single best app, because each one is built for a different job. Car Scanner and Torque Pro suit people who like live gauges, FORScan and BimmerCode are brand tools, and a plain code reader suits the owner who only wants to know what a light means.
Why will my ELM327 adapter not connect?
The usual reasons are an ignition that is off, a Classic Bluetooth adapter on an iPhone, the wrong connection type chosen in the app, or an adapter that was not paired in the phone settings on Android. A faulty clone is the next suspect.
