P2101: Throttle Actuator "A" Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance

Quick Answer

Not safe to drive

P2101 means the throttle position the engine computer measures does not match the position it predicted from its own command to the throttle motor, for longer than it allows. The motor circuit is often electrically intact, which is why the generic definition calls it a performance fault, although some makes also log throttle wiring faults under this code. Common reasons are a worn or dirty throttle body, high resistance in the throttle wiring or connector, a weak battery and, in cold damp weather, ice in the throttle bore. Until it is fixed the computer limits power, because it cannot trust the throttle.

What does P2101 mean?

P2101 is a electrical-related diagnostic trouble code classified as high severity. When your vehicle's ECU detects this condition, it stores P2101 and illuminates the check engine light.

What are the symptoms of P2101?

If your vehicle has triggered P2101, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Check engine or EPC light, often with a reduced power message
  • Very weak acceleration even with the pedal pressed fully
  • Engine stalling when coming to a stop, or a raised idle
  • Fault appearing after a frosty or wet night, or after starting problems
  • Cruise control unavailable

What causes P2101?

Here are the most common causes of P2101:

  • Worn throttle body: motor, gears or position sensors no longer following the command

    : high

  • Carbon on the throttle plate or bore slowing the throttle down

    : high

  • High resistance in the throttle motor or position sensor wiring, often at the connector

    : medium

  • Low battery voltage or a charging fault

    : low

  • Ice in the throttle bore holding the plate open after cold, wet weather

    : low

  • Engine computer fault (rare, check everything else first)

    : low

Is it safe to drive with P2101?

No - address this immediately. Not safe for normal driving. P2101 means the electronic throttle is not reaching the position the engine computer expected. The computer cuts power to a safe level, so acceleration can be very weak and the engine may stall when you stop. Get the car to a safe place or a nearby workshop at low speed, and do not tow a trailer.

How do you diagnose P2101?

Follow these steps to pinpoint the root cause of P2101:

  1. Read all codes and the freeze frame. Codes for the throttle position sensors (P0121 to P0123, P2135) or for low system voltage (P0562) are fixed first. A generic OBD2 reader shows throttle position and pedal position where the car reports them, and the freeze frame shows the conditions when the code set.
  2. Test the battery and charging voltage. A weak battery or a failing alternator can set P2101 on its own, so it is the cheapest check and comes before any parts.
  3. If the code appeared after a frosty or wet night, let the car warm up under cover and check whether the throttle now closes normally. Ice in the bore can hold the plate open.
  4. With the ignition on and the engine off, on cars where the throttle follows the pedal without the engine running, watch the throttle position reading while a helper presses the pedal slowly. It should rise smoothly and evenly. A jump, flat spot or delay points to the throttle body or its wiring.
  5. Unplug the throttle body and check the pins for corrosion and spread terminals, then measure the motor and sensor wires for high resistance back to the engine computer.
  6. If the battery, wiring and plate are all good, the throttle body itself is worn and is replaced as a unit.
  7. Clear the codes and run the throttle or idle learn the make specifies, which on many cars needs manufacturer-level software, then road-test from cold.

How much does P2101 cost to fix?

Repair costs for P2101 vary depending on the root cause and your vehicle. Here are typical estimates:

Repair Parts Cost Labor Cost Total Estimate DIY Difficulty
Clean throttle body and run the throttle learn €0–€10 €30–€80 €30–€90 Easy
Repair throttle body wiring or connector €10–€40 €60–€180 €70–€220 Moderate
Replace electronic throttle body €120–€450 €30–€150 €150–€600 Moderate
Throttle learn with diagnostic software (where required) €0–€0 €30–€80 €30–€80 Professional
Workshop diagnosis (live data and circuit tests) €0–€0 €30–€80 €30–€80 Professional

Prices estimated as of March 2026. Costs vary by region, vehicle, and shop.

Common questions about P2101

What does P2101 mean?
The engine computer predicted where the throttle should be from its own command, and the measured position did not match closely enough. The throttle is not keeping up, even though the motor circuit may be intact.
Is P2101 the throttle body or the accelerator pedal?
Usually the throttle body, because the code compares the throttle's own position with the command. A pedal sensor fault normally sets its own code, such as P2138. Watching the pedal and throttle readings side by side on a reader shows which one is wrong.
Can I drive with P2101?
Only at low speed to a safe place or a workshop. Power is cut hard on most cars and the engine can stall at junctions, which makes fast roads dangerous.
Can low battery voltage cause P2101?
Yes. Saab's workshop information for its GM-built engines lists a low battery or charging condition as able to set the code. If the car has had starting problems or a weak battery, test it before replacing the throttle body.
Can cold weather cause P2101?
It can. Ice that forms in the throttle bore after a cold, damp night can stop the plate from closing, and Saab's workshop information for its GM-built engines names this as a cause. If the code appeared on a frosty morning and clears once the engine is warm, check the throttle and the intake for water.
How much does it cost to fix P2101?
Expect about 30 to 90 euros for a throttle body clean and learn, 70 to 220 euros for a connector or wiring repair, and 150 to 600 euros for a new electronic throttle body fitted. A learn that needs diagnostic software adds 30 to 80 euros.
