OBD Auto Doctor Review: Free vs Premium, Adapters, Limits
OBD Auto Doctor reviewed from its listings and help pages: what the free plan covers, what Premium costs, which adapters work on iPhone and how to connect.
The short answer
OBD Auto Doctor is a well-rated code reader for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. The free plan reads stored, pending and permanent codes and the readiness monitors, with limited live data. It does not clear the check engine light or show freeze frame. Both need Premium, a subscription at 29.99 euros a year or 5.99 euros a month that covers every platform. Read your code free first, then decide whether to pay.
Key Takeaways(5)
- iPhone and iPad: iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later, per the App Store listing.
- Android: through Google Play.
- Windows: Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11, from the vendor's download page.
- Mac: macOS 12 Monterey or newer, from the same page. Older versions sit in the version history.
- iPhone and iPad: Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi adapters. The vendor's Bluetooth LE list includes Carista, FIXD, Kiwi 3 and 4, LELink, OBDLink CX, Veepeak and Vgate. Classic Bluetooth adapters cannot connect, except the OBDLink MX+, vLinker FS and vLinker MS, which the vendor says are Made for iPhone certified.

The check engine light came on in a 2014 Golf, and the 20 euro ELM327 adapter in the glovebox is finally getting used. OBD Auto Doctor is one of the first apps a search turns up. Before you install it, you want to know what the free version does, what Premium costs and whether your adapter will talk to your phone. This review answers those from the vendor's pricing and help pages and the store listings as they stood in October 2026. We did not test the app on a car.
Is OBD Auto Doctor any good?
For reading what the car's OBD2 system reports, yes, and store users rate it well: 4.3 stars from about 1,450 ratings on the German App Store and 4.2 on Google Play. With Premium it covers the full generic toolkit: codes, freeze frame, live data with logging, readiness, the on-board test results and vehicle IDs. It is also one of the few apps that runs on Windows and Mac as well as phones.
What it does not do is judge the fault for you. It shows a code and its description; how urgent that code is on your car, and what fixing it costs, you have to work out yourself.
| If you are... | OBD Auto Doctor is... |
|---|---|
| An owner who only wants to know why the light is on | Enough on the free plan, but turning the light off needs Premium |
| Someone who works on the car with a laptop | One of the few apps with a Windows and Mac version |
| A driver who wants one app on phone and computer | A good fit, since one subscription covers both |
| Someone who wants to pay once | Not it, because Premium is a subscription |
| Someone who wants a verdict and a repair price | Outside what it offers |
Is OBD Auto Doctor free, and what does Premium cost?
The app is free to download. The vendor's pricing page splits the features into Free and Premium:
| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed, pending and permanent codes | Yes | Yes |
| Code database search | Yes | Yes |
| Readiness monitors | Yes | Yes |
| ECU name and OBD protocol | Yes | Yes |
| Live data and sensor graph | Limited | Full |
| Freeze frame | No | Yes |
| Clear codes and the check engine light | No | Yes |
| Manufacturer-specific codes | No | Yes |
| On-board test results (Mode $06) and service routines (Mode $08) | No | Yes |
| VIN and calibration IDs | No | Yes |
| Data logging with CSV export | No | Yes |
Premium is a subscription. The German App Store lists Premium annual at 29.99 euros and Premium monthly at 5.99 euros, and the US store lists the same figures in dollars. The vendor's own site sells it yearly or quarterly. One subscription covers every supported platform and includes updates and email support. There is no minimum term, you keep Premium to the end of the paid period after cancelling, and there is no limit on the number of cars.
The App Store list also shows Personal (24.99 euros a year) and Professional (29.99 euros a year) plans plus several items marked legacy. The pricing page names only Free and Premium, so Premium is the one to compare.
One more line on the pricing page matters: "not all features are available in the mobile apps but only in the computer software." The page does not say which ones, so check in the app before you pay for a feature you need on the phone.
A trouble code and a one-line description leave the next decision to you: drive on, book a workshop, or park it. Skanyx reads the same ELM327 adapter and puts a four-step colour severity on each code, from green for minor to red for park safely, together with the likely causes and repair costs in your currency. Reading and clearing codes costs nothing. Read your own code in Skanyx
Which phones and computers does it run on?
- iPhone and iPad: iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later, per the App Store listing.
- Android: through Google Play.
- Windows: Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11, from the vendor's download page.
- Mac: macOS 12 Monterey or newer, from the same page. Older versions sit in the version history.
There is no Linux download. The App Store lists nine languages: English, German, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Finnish and Swedish.
Which adapters work with OBD Auto Doctor?
The vendor supports ELM327-based adapters with ELM version 1.2 or higher, plus the Diamex DX70 Bluetooth adapter. What works depends on the device:
- iPhone and iPad: Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi adapters. The vendor's Bluetooth LE list includes Carista, FIXD, Kiwi 3 and 4, LELink, OBDLink CX, Veepeak and Vgate. Classic Bluetooth adapters cannot connect, except the OBDLink MX+, vLinker FS and vLinker MS, which the vendor says are Made for iPhone certified.
- Android: classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi.
- Windows and Mac: serial, classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, USB and Wi-Fi.
The vendor recommends Bluetooth in general. For iPhone owners who cannot use a Bluetooth LE adapter, it names Wi-Fi as the fallback, with one catch: while the phone is joined to the adapter's Wi-Fi, it cannot be on any other Wi-Fi network.
On quality, the adapter page advises against the cheapest clones, because "a device that looks the same does not guarantee similar behavior." It calls the OBDLink MX+ the best Bluetooth adapter and the OBDLink CX the best Bluetooth LE one, and says the OBDLink LX does not work on iPhone or iPad. If you are choosing hardware, the ELM327, Vgate, vLinker and OBDLink compatibility pages list what each family does, and the ELM327 adapter guide explains the connection types.
How do you connect OBD Auto Doctor to an ELM327 adapter?
The adapter goes into the 16-pin OBD2 socket, normally below the steering column, with the ignition switched on. The phone side, per the vendor's quick start guides:
- Install the free app. Turn Bluetooth on, or for a Wi-Fi adapter join its network under Settings and Wi-Fi.
- In the app, open the Extras tab and choose Connectivity.
- Set the connection to Bluetooth and pick your adapter, or set it to Wi-Fi and enter the adapter's IP address and port. The vendor says the defaults suit most Wi-Fi adapters.
- Go back to the Status tab and tap the connect button at the top right.
If it will not connect, the troubleshooting page says the usual cause is that the adapter fails to detect the car's OBD protocol. Check the car is OBD2 compliant and the adapter is on the supported list, restart the phone, then set the protocol by hand under Extras and Connectivity instead of leaving it on automatic. If that still fails, switch on Troubleshooting under Extras and Help, try to connect again, and tap Send log. The app opens an email draft that you have to send yourself.
What does OBD Auto Doctor do well?
Phone and computer on one subscription. A laptop with a USB or Bluetooth adapter is easier to read during a long logging session, and the same Premium covers your phone.
A usable free tier for reading. Codes in all three states, readiness monitors and the ECU and protocol details cost nothing. That is enough to find out what the light is about and whether the car is ready for an emissions test.
The OBD2 service routines. The Google Play listing names the three routines the standard defines: an evaporative system leak test, a particulate filter regeneration request and an inducement system reset. They need Premium and a car that supports them.
Logging for later. Premium records sensor data and exports it as CSV, and exports graphs as images.
What does OBD Auto Doctor not do?
It does not tell you what a fault means for your car. The listings describe a reader and a data viewer, with no safe-to-drive verdict, cause list or repair-cost range. Beyond the three generic service routines, none of the vendor's pages mention coding or brand-specific service functions such as a service-light reset.
The free plan also leaves out the two things most owners want after reading a code. It will not clear the light, and it does not show freeze frame, the snapshot of engine conditions at the moment the fault was stored.
How does OBD Auto Doctor compare with Car Scanner?
Price model and platforms split them. Car Scanner Pro can be bought once for about 9 euros (or about 5 euros a year) and runs on phones only. OBD Auto Doctor Premium is about 30 euros a year and adds Windows and Mac. Car Scanner's developer lists coding on some Volkswagen group, Renault/Dacia and Toyota models and service functions on some Hyundai and Kia models; OBD Auto Doctor lists no coding, only the standard OBD2 service routines. The Car Scanner ELM OBD2 review covers that app in the same detail, and the Car Scanner alternatives comparison sets several apps side by side.
Who should pick OBD Auto Doctor?
Pick it if you want the same app on a laptop and a phone, a yearly subscription does not bother you and you already know how to judge a code. It also suits someone who wants to log sensor data on a computer and open it in a spreadsheet.
Look elsewhere if one of these matters more:
- Paying once: Car Scanner and Torque Pro (Android only, about 4 euros) sell one-time upgrades. The best OBD2 scanner apps round-up compares more options.
- Clearing the light for free: the free plan here cannot, while Skanyx and some other apps clear codes without a paid plan.
- Knowing what the fault means: pick an app that interprets codes, not only reads them.
- Brand coding: buy the dedicated tool for that make.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use OBD Auto Doctor with any ELM327 adapter?
Any ELM327 at version 1.2 or higher is on the supported list, but the vendor warns that many clones do not behave like the real chip. On an iPhone the radio type decides more than the brand: a classic Bluetooth adapter will not connect unless it is one of the three certified models.
Will it work on an older car?
Only if the car has OBD2. In the EU that covers petrol cars from 2001 and diesel cars from 2004, and in the US cars from 1996. The OBD2 beginner's guide explains how to check yours.
What do the live data numbers mean?
The app shows the values without interpreting them, and the free plan shows only part of the list. The OBD2 live data guide explains the common sensors.
The Golf's light is still on. The free plan is enough to find out which code set it. If you then want the light off, or you cannot tell how serious the code is, that is the point to choose between Premium and a different app.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is OBD Auto Doctor free?
- The app is free to download, and the vendor's pricing page lists a free plan that reads confirmed, pending and permanent codes, shows the readiness monitors and gives limited live data. Clearing codes and freeze frame are marked as not included in Free. Premium is a subscription that unlocks the rest.
- How much is OBD Auto Doctor Premium?
- About 30 euros a year or about 6 euros a month. The German App Store lists Premium annual at 29.99 euros and Premium monthly at 5.99 euros, and the US store lists 29.99 and 5.99 dollars. The vendor says one Premium subscription works on all supported platforms.
- Does OBD Auto Doctor work on iPhone?
- Yes, on iOS 17 or later according to the App Store listing. Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi adapters work. Classic Bluetooth adapters do not, except three models the vendor calls Made for iPhone certified: OBDLink MX+, vLinker FS and vLinker MS.
- Which adapter works with OBD Auto Doctor?
- The vendor supports ELM327-based adapters with ELM version 1.2 or higher, plus the Diamex DX70. It calls OBDLink and Vgate (vLinker, iCar) the best brands and advises against the cheapest clones, because clone makers often put different electronics inside identical-looking housings.
- Can OBD Auto Doctor clear the check engine light?
- Only on Premium. The vendor's feature table marks Clear DTCs and MIL as not included in the Free plan, so the free app shows the code but will not reset the light.
- Why won't OBD Auto Doctor connect to my car?
- The vendor says that in most failures the adapter does not detect the car's OBD protocol. Check the car is OBD2 compliant, check the adapter is supported, restart the phone, then pick the protocol by hand under Extras and Connectivity. If it still fails, the app can send a troubleshooting log to the vendor.
- Is OBD Auto Doctor better than Car Scanner?
- They suit different people. OBD Auto Doctor runs on phones, Windows and Mac, and one Premium subscription covers all of them. Car Scanner runs on phones only, but its Pro can be bought once for about 9 euros, and its developer lists coding on some Volkswagen group cars.
