  2. Inspect for leaking fuel injectors. With the engine off, remove the fuel rail and cycle the fuel pump on (key to position II). Watch each injector tip for dripping. A leaking injector will drip fuel visibly.
  3. Check the MAF sensor reading at idle. If the sensor reports higher airflow than actual, the ECU will deliver excess fuel. Clean the MAF with dedicated sensor cleaner or compare readings to known-good values.
  4. Measure fuel pressure at idle. Higher than specification pressure forces excess fuel through the injectors even at normal duty cycle. The fuel pressure regulator may be stuck or its vacuum reference line disconnected.
  5. Check the EVAP purge valve by disconnecting its vacuum hose at idle. If the idle improves and fuel trims move toward zero, the purge valve is stuck open and allowing excess fuel vapour into the intake.

What is the difference between P0172 and P2188?

P0172 indicates a system-wide rich condition at all RPMs, while P2188 is rich only at idle. P2188 narrows the diagnosis to problems that are most pronounced at idle, such as a leaking injector dripping fuel or a stuck EVAP purge valve.

Can a leaking fuel injector cause P2188?
