Cosa significa U0100?

U0100 sets when another control module stops receiving CAN messages from the ECM/PCM. It's a communication failure, not an engine mechanical fault, and it usually prevents the car from starting or keeps it in severe limp mode.

  • Engine cranks but won't start, or stalls within seconds
  • Multiple warning lights illuminated at once (check engine, ABS, traction, airbag)
  • Speedometer and tachometer read zero or sweep erratically
  • Transmission stuck in limp mode or won't shift out of park
  • Scan tool cannot connect to the ECM but reaches other modules
  • Intermittent stalling that resolves after an ignition cycle

Cosa causa U0100?

Ecco le cause più comuni di U0100:

altaWeak or discharged battery, or poor grounds causing voltage drop on the CAN bus
altaCorroded, loose, or bent pins in the ECM connector
altaBlown ECM power/ignition fuse or failed main relay
mediaDamaged CAN bus wiring: chafed, rodent-chewed, or shorted CAN-H/CAN-L
mediaFailed ECM/PCM internally (bus driver or power supply)
bassaWater intrusion into a control module dragging the bus down

È sicuro guidare con U0100?

No, risolvi subito il problema. U0100 means one or more modules on the CAN bus have lost contact with the engine control module. The engine usually won't start or will stall. Even if it runs, transmission, ABS, and stability systems may behave unpredictably because they've lost engine RPM and load data. Get it towed.

Come si diagnostica U0100?

Segui questi passaggi per individuare la causa principale di U0100:

  1. Load-test the battery and confirm at least 12.4V resting, 9.6V minimum during crank. Bus faults below 11V during crank are common and mask the real cause.
  2. Scan every module and log which ones report U0100 plus any companion U-codes. One reporter points to wiring at that module, multiple reporters point to the ECM or the bus itself.
  3. Check ECM-related fuses and relays in both the underhood and interior fuse boxes against the wiring diagram, including battery-fed and ignition-fed circuits.
  4. Measure ECM power and ground at the module connector, key on: battery voltage on B+ pins, under 0.1V drop on ground pins referenced to the negative battery post.
  5. With ignition off and battery disconnected, measure CAN-H to CAN-L resistance at the DLC. Expect about 60 ohms (two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel). 120 ohms means one terminator or half the bus is missing.
  6. Backprobe CAN-H and CAN-L at the ECM connector, key on. Both lines should idle around 2.5V, with CAN-H rising and CAN-L falling during traffic. An oscilloscope makes this obvious.
  7. If the bus is shorted or flooded, disconnect suspect modules one at a time until communication returns to identify the offender.
  8. Only after power, grounds, fuses, and bus wiring are verified good, swap in a known-good ECM to confirm before ordering a replacement.

E9x cars use PT-CAN and F-CAN. The FRM (footwell module) is the classic U0100 culprit: it crashes when jump started or programmed with battery below 12V and takes the bus with it. DME connector water intrusion under the cabin filter housing is the second most common cause.

Domande frequenti su U0100

Can a dead or weak battery really cause U0100?

Yes, and it's the most common trigger I see. CAN modules need stable voltage to transmit properly. A battery that drops below 10V during crank routinely throws U0100 across multiple modules. Charge or replace the battery and reassess before chasing wiring.

Will U0100 clear itself once I fix the problem?

The stored code and MIL stay until you clear them with a scan tool, but the no-start or stalling condition resolves the moment communication is restored. Clear the code, drive a full ignition cycle, and rescan to confirm it stays gone.

Why did U0100 appear right after I jump started the car?

Reverse polarity or a voltage spike during a jump can blow ECM fuses or damage bus drivers in modules like the BMW FRM. Check ECM power fuses first. If a fuse blows again immediately, a module is shorted internally.

Does U0100 always mean I need a new ECM?

No. In my experience roughly 70% of U0100 cases are battery, ground, fuse, connector, or wiring related. Replacing the ECM without confirmed power and bus tests is how people spend €1500 and still have the code.

I have U0100 plus U0101 and U0155. What does that combination mean?

Multiple U-codes from different modules almost always point to a bus problem, not individual module failures. Focus on shared CAN wiring, the gateway module, or a single module that's shorting the bus and taking everything else offline.
