P0353: Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

Quick Answer
Moderata GravitàNon sicuro da guidareAccensione

P0353 means the ECU saw an electrical fault in the coil 3 primary or secondary circuit. Usually a dead coil-on-plug, sometimes wiring or connector corrosion, rarely the ECU driver itself.

Costo di riparazione stimatoDa €28 a €1500+, varia in base al veicolo

Cosa significa P0353?

P0353 means the ECU saw an electrical fault in the coil 3 primary or secondary circuit. Usually a dead coil-on-plug, sometimes wiring or connector corrosion, rarely the ECU driver itself.

  • Rough idle with a noticeable shake at stoplights
  • Check engine light on, often flashing under load if cylinder 3 is misfiring
  • Loss of power and hesitation during acceleration
  • Fuel economy drop of 10 to 20 percent
  • Raw fuel smell from the exhaust
  • Sputtering or backfire under hard throttle
  • Hard starting when the engine is warm

Cosa causa P0353?

Ecco le cause più comuni di P0353:

altaFailed ignition coil on cylinder 3
altaWorn or fouled spark plug on cylinder 3 stressing the coil
mediaDamaged coil connector or corroded pins
mediaBroken or chafed wiring between ECU and coil
mediaOil in the spark plug well shorting the coil (valve cover gasket leak)
bassaFailed ignition driver circuit inside the ECU/PCM

È sicuro guidare con P0353?

No, risolvi subito il problema. You can limp home, but don't keep driving on it. Raw fuel dumping into the exhaust from cylinder 3 will destroy your catalytic converter within a few hundred kilometres, and that's a €600 to €1,500 mistake.

Come si diagnostica P0353?

Segui questi passaggi per individuare la causa principale di P0353:

  1. Read all stored codes. If P0303 is present alongside P0353, that confirms cylinder 3 is actually misfiring and not just an electrical glitch.
  2. Pull the coil on cylinder 3 and inspect the boot for cracks, carbon tracking, or oil in the plug well.
  3. Swap coil 3 with coil 1 or 2. Clear codes and drive. If the fault moves (P0351 or P0352), the coil is bad. If P0353 stays, the coil is fine.
  4. Pull the plug on cylinder 3. Replace if the electrode is worn, oil-fouled, or beyond the service interval (typically 60,000 km for copper, 100,000+ for iridium).
  5. Inspect the coil connector for green corrosion, spread pins, or a broken lock tab. Wiggle-test the harness with the engine idling.
  6. Back-probe the connector with a multimeter: verify battery voltage on the power pin (key on, engine off) and continuity from the trigger pin back to the ECU.
  7. If coil, plug, and wiring all test good and the code returns on the same cylinder, suspect an ECU ignition driver failure. That needs a shop with proper diagnostic gear.

Volkswagen

P0353 su Volkswagen Golf

2006-2014 (Mk5/Mk6, 2.0 TSI/TFSI, EA113 and EA888)

The 2.0 TSI is notorious for coil pack failures in batches. VW issued multiple part number revisions (06H905115 series) and dealers typically replace all four together under the same TSB.

BMW

P0353 su BMW 3-Series

2007-2013 (E90/E92, N54/N55 turbo inline-6)

N54 and N55 engines are hard on coils because of boost pressure and higher secondary voltage demand. BMW used both Bosch and Delphi coils; running a mixed set often triggers repeat misfire codes.

Cosa causa P0353 su una BMW 3-Series?

BMW 3-SeriesBoost pressure blowing marginal coils past 60,000 km
BMW 3-SeriesMixed-brand coil sets causing uneven firing and repeat faults
BMW 3-SeriesValve cover gasket leaks flooding the plug wells with oil (a known N54/N55 issue by 100,000 km)

Ford

P0353 su Ford F-150

2004-2010 (5.4L 3-valve Triton V8)

The 5.4L 3V is infamous for the two-piece spark plugs (Motorcraft SP-514) seizing in the head and breaking during removal. If P0353 shows at high mileage, budget for the plug extraction job even if the coil is the primary fault.

Cosa causa P0353 su una Ford F-150?

Ford F-150Original Motorcraft coils failing after 120,000 km
Ford F-150Damaged coil boot from a broken two-piece plug during previous service
Ford F-150Water pooling in the coil valley from a clogged cowl drain
Toyota

P0353 su Toyota Camry

2007-2017 (2AR-FE 2.5L I4, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6)

Toyota Denso coils are among the most reliable in the industry and rarely fail before 200,000 km. If P0353 appears early on a 2GR-FE V6, cylinder 3 sits at the rear of the block behind the intake plenum, so labour is higher than the front bank.

Cosa causa P0353 su una Toyota Camry?

Toyota CamryDenso coil failure at very high mileage (200,000+ km)
Toyota CamryRodent damage to the coil harness on vehicles stored outdoors

Honda

P0353 su Honda Civic

2006-2015 (R18 1.8L, K24 2.4L Si)

Honda coil-on-plug units are reliable. When they do fail, it's usually because a leaking valve cover gasket (a common R18 complaint around 150,000 km) has soaked the coil boot in oil.

Domande frequenti su P0353

Can I just swap the coil from another cylinder to test?

Yes, and it's the fastest free diagnostic you can do. Move coil 3 to cylinder 1, clear the codes, drive for 10 minutes. If the misfire follows the coil to cylinder 1 (P0351), you've confirmed the coil is bad. If P0353 comes back, the problem is in the plug, wiring, or ECU.

Should I replace all coils at once or just cylinder 3?

If your car has over 150,000 km on the original coils and one has died, the others are on borrowed time. Replacing all of them costs more upfront but saves you repeat labour. On a 4-cylinder that's usually worth it, on a V8 with coil-on-plug it's a judgement call based on budget.

Why does my check engine light flash instead of staying solid?

A flashing CEL means active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over as soon as it's safe and don't drive on it. Continued driving with a flashing light typically writes off the cat within 30 to 60 minutes of running.

How much of a fuel economy hit will I see?

Expect 10 to 20 percent worse consumption. One dead cylinder means the others work harder, and the O2 sensors will command extra fuel trying to compensate for the unburned mixture reaching the exhaust.

Are cheap aftermarket coils worth it?

For older cars, name-brand coils from Bosch, NGK, or Denso in the €20 to €40 range are fine. Avoid no-name Amazon coils under €10 each, I've seen those fail within weeks. For German cars and turbocharged engines, stick to OE or OE-equivalent.
